Five Minute Unikitty Costume

No matter how old you get, there’s just something fun about dressing up.  So, when my friend Vanessa threw a {totally amazing} LEGO Movie themed 7th birthday party for her son, even the adults decided to play along and wear costumes.  Here’s how I put together a quick and super-easy DIY Unikitty costume that took about five minutes and cost me absolutely nothing.

I didn’t realize until very close to the party that most of my friends were planning on dressing up.  Originally, I was just going to wear the LEGO shirt I made for Little Crafter’s Ultimate LEGO birthday party two years ago.  But once I heard about the various costumes they were putting together, I couldn’t help but play along.  I pulled up a photo of Unikitty online to see what I would need.

Obviously, there are only so many things a girl can do to make herself look like a combination unicorn and cat made from LEGO bricks, so I decided to focus on the must-haves.

– pink ears
– a blue unicorn horn
– a blue tail
– major eyelashes
– a pink nose and rosy pink cheeks

Now.  To make it happen.  I started with the all important ears and horn combination.  Obviously, the way to go for this was a headband.  Here’s how I did it.

The Ears/Horn:
– headband {I happened to have a pink sparkly one, but anything will do in a pinch}
– pink and blue or white felt
– scissors
– hot glue and glue gun
– Elmer’s Glitter Glue, blue

I cut an ear shape from pink felt, then used it as a pattern to cut one more.  I wrapped each one around the headband and hot glued it in place.  Then, I rolled a piece of white felt into a cone shape.  I trimmed around the bottom leaving a large tab in the front.  I placed it on the headband and folded the tab under the headband, then glued it to the back of the horn.  Then, I finished by adding Elmer’s blue glitter glue.  If you happen to have light blue felt on hand, it would be even better to use that {and of course, still glitter it too}.  I, alas, did not, so I went with white and depended on the glitter glue to make it look the right color.

I figured that after the horn and ears, the most important thing to do was make my face sort of resemble UniKitty…otherwise I would just look like a weirdo randomly pretending to be a unicorn {as Erin so helpfully pointed out when I modeled them for her in the car}.

The Makeup:
– shimmery white eye shadow
– black eye liner
– black mascara
– eyelash curler
– hot pink lipstick {I love Bombshell by CoverGirl}
– pink blush
– CoverGirl TruMagic Luminizer

As always, I started by applying my Olay moisturizer with sunscreen and my foundation.  Then, I tackled my eyes first.  I gave the lids all the way up to the brow line a coat of shimmery white eye shadow.  Unikitty has some seriously big eyes, and I knew this would make my eyes look bigger and brighter.  Next, I took black eyeliner and not only lined the lids, but gave myself three giant faux-lashes at the outer corner of each eye.  Then it was time for some serious mascara.  I curled my lashes first, then applied several coats of black mascara to both my top and bottom lashes.  For the cheeks, I used my finger in some dark pink blush to create large circles.  I finished off by applying hot pink lipstick to my lips and using a cotton swab to color the end of my nose with the same lipstick.

The Tail:

– light blue yarn
– scissors
– a book
– belt

I didn’t realize until I sat down to write this post that I never actually got a good pic of my “tail.”  Blogger fail!  But I’ll tell you how I created it!  All I did was wrap yarn around a book…well, actually I think it was the case of a Wii game, about 50 times.  I cut the yarn at the bottom, which gave me a handful of strings that were all the same length, then tied a short piece of yarn around the middle of the strings.  Voilá, a tail!  To wear it, I simply tied it to a belt.  I happened to have a hot pink glittery belt from NY&Co…doesn’t everyone own one?  If you don’t have pink, though, any color would work.

All that was left was to find some pink clothes to wear.  I happened to have a tank top and a pink skirt from Old Navy in my closet.  I almost wore my pink pajama pants, which would have been comfier, but I decided at the last minute that it might just look like I was too lazy to get out of my pj’s all the way.  Which would have been entirely true.

Lego Movie Costumes

Pink tights would have made things even more fun, as would a blue sock and a yellow sock, but alas, I didn’t have any of those things and didn’t have time before the party to get them.  I wore my pink Jelly Beans jellies and a pair of black leggings.  Mostly, I put the leggings on because it was a kids’ party and I wanted to {a} be able to sit around on the floor and play with the kids and {2} be sure I was never inappropriate from a small person’s vantage point.

Here you can see that I was not alone with my costume fun!  How many LEGO movie characters can you find?

Lego Movie CostumesThere’s President Business, two Wild Styles {one grownup and one not}, two Unikittys, two Emmets, Batman, Good Cop, Ma Cop, Vitruvius, the Crazy Cat Lady, Robin, and some Tako Tuesday folks.  Now that’s what I call a par-tay!

Who would you be?
