Quick & Easy Watercolor Mother’s Day Card

Did you know how incredibly easy it is to get the look of watercolors without using any paint at all? Today, I want to show you one of my favorite techniques for giving a watercolor background to your hand lettered designs. We’re going to use it to create a super quick and easy DIY Mother’s Day card, but you can use it for any kind of lettering project you like!

You’ll need:

Tombow Dual Brush Pens {3-5 colors that blend well together}
Tombow Fudenosuke Brush Pen
Sandwich size plastic baggie
Water Pen {or water and a paintbrush}
Bristol Board or Hot Press Watercolor Paper
Paper Cutter or Ruler and Scissors

The easiest way to teach this technique is to let you see it in action, so check out this quick video! Then, the written instructions are below to clarify and answer any questions you might have.

Step 1: Cut your paper.

For a standard card, you’ll want an 8.5″ x 5.5″ piece that you’ll then fold in half. Regular card stock or computer paper aren’t ideal, because they aren’t designed to hold water. Instead, you’ll want either Bristol Board or Hot Press Watercolor Paper.

Step 2: Color directly onto the plastic bag.

Step 3: Apply water to your paper using a water pen or a paint brush.

My motto is “the wetter, the better.” The more water that’s on your paper, the more your colors will blend.

Step 4: Flip your baggie so the colored side touches the wet paper and rub to blend the colors.

You can either rub from the other side of the baggie, or some folks like to stick their hand inside instead!

Step 5: Once the color is dry, letter a message on top.

Make sure the background is not at all wet, or it will cause the ink of your black pen to bleed.

That’s all there is to it! Play around with combining different colors and you’ll get all kinds of pretty results. I like to stick with various shades of the same color, or colors in the same family like blues and greens, but you can try any combinations you like. Here are a few other project ideas created using the same technique; check them out!
