Festive Chopsticks & Delicious Fried Rice

Our family is so excited to celebrate Chinese New Year and ring in the Year of the Dog! While the actual New Year’s Day falls on February 16, the Chinese actually celebrate this Spring Festival for more than two weeks. It’s a great time to enjoy all your favorite Asian foods and learn about another culture.

If you’re looking for some delicious Asian-inspired dinner ideas that are quick and easy to prepare, Ling Ling has you covered. Whether you’re craving dumplings or prefer a big bowl of fried rice, you can have authentic recipes in your kitchen without the trouble of making them from scratch. Are you a noodle lover? Ling Ling offers Drunken Noodles and Yakisoba Noodles, both of which are traditional dishes infused with sauces, proteins, and vegetables. Prefer potstickers? Ling Ling potstickers are made with chicken or pork and tender vegetables combined in a mouthwatering dumpling wrapper accompanied by a signature dipping sauce. And of course, there are Fried Rice dishes like Chinese Style Vegetable and Yakitori Chicken made with tender vegetables, delicious proteins and flavor infused rice that tastes great down to the last grain.

No matter which meals you choose, your family will love the traditional flavors of Asia. To make your experience even more authentic, you’ll need chopsticks! Here’s an easy and inexpensive way to give plain wooden chopsticks a makeover in honor of China’s biggest holiday.

You’ll need:

Plain wooden chopsticks
FolkArt Multi-Surface paint, Apple Red
FolkArt Metallic Paint, Antique Gold
Small Paintbrush
Washi or Painters’ Tape
Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe Gloss {optional}

Step 1: Wrap a piece of tape around each chopstick with the top edge at the point where you want the color to stop.

You can paint as much or as little of the stick as you like, but keep in mind that you won’t want the painted area to come into contact with food or anyone’s mouth. While all the craft materials are non-toxic, they are not officially “food safe”, so I wouldn’t paint any more than the top third of the wood. That part just stays in your hand, so you’ll be totally safe.

Step 2: Paint the area above the tape.

It only took me one coat of Apple Red to get total coverage. Remove the tape while the paint is still wet so you get a nice, clean line.

Step 3: Use the opposite end of your paintbrush to create decorative polka dots.

You’ll want to dip the bottom of the brush handle into your paint each time to create dots that are a uniform size. You can do this on just one side, two sides, or even all four if you prefer. If your chopsticks happen to be more round, you can do the dots wherever you like.

If you like, you can call these finished! To care for them, you can clean the bottom part by hand with soap and water, making sure that the painted areas aren’t immersed. Then, gently wipe the tops clean. If you prefer to be able to immerse the whole thing or even clean them in the dishwasher, move on to the next step.

Step 4: Apply a coat of Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe formula to the painted area of each chopstick to seal your work.

Make sure the paint is totally dry before completing this step.

Once the Mod Podge dries, it needs to air cure for 28 days, but then you can clean your chopsticks in the dishwasher! Whichever way you choose to finish your chopsticks, once they’re ready, it’s time to put them to use and enjoy some tasty Asian flavor!
