Free Hand Lettering Practice Page: “And” and Ampersands

Hey, friends! Who’s ready to start off the new year with some hand lettering? In the past, I’ve shared a variety of practice sheets for writing the alphabet, so I thought today we’d look at something new to add a little pizzazz to your lettered designs…”and”s and ampersands!

So many of the quotes and phrases you’ll want to letter will have something in common; the word “and.” Instead of just writing it like everything else, let’s get creative! I’ve put together a practice sheet showing eight of my favorite ways to write this little word/symbol. Take a look.

Hand Lettering Practice: Ampersands

Each word/symbol is written in black as a sample and then in gray for you to trace before trying it on your own in the blank space provided.

Here’s how to use it:

1. DOWNLOAD TO YOUR COMPUTER, THEN PRINT AND USE WITH BRUSH PENS.

The Tombow Fudenosuke is ideal to use on these pages, because the size of the tip is a perfect match for the examples. If you like, though, you can also fill a row using a Dual Brush Pen to give you practice with two different kinds and sizes of pens. 2. DOWNLOAD ON YOUR IPAD PRO AND OPEN IN THE PROCREATE APP.

If you’re lucky enough to have an iPad Pro and like to make your lettering digital, just open each page in Procreate, then use your Apple Pencil to trace over the examples and write your own. The best part about this is that you can always erase and reuse the practice sheets as many times as you like! A good brush to use is called Light Calligraphy and is available on Creative Market. Or, you can follow this easy tutorial to create a custom brush like the one I use for my digital lettering!

Ready to get started? I’ve also included a link to a blank lined sheet in case you’d like extra practice.

  1. Every time I try the link for the Light Calligraphy brush, it just takes me to the Brushes page on Creative Market. I’m not sure how to search for the brush you are trying to link to. I’m having pretty good success with some of the native brushes in Procreate, but I’m always interested in trying something new. I may try your brush tutorial again—last time I tried, I was not happy with the way the brush behaved.

  3. Hey, thank you for sharing free practice sheets 😀
I would like to ask if it’s okay to use your blank practice sheet for my youtube video?
    Thanks in advance.
