Fun With Paint: Spray Splatter Canvas

Thanks to Plaid Crafts for sponsoring today’s post. As always, all opinions are honestly my own.

Raise your hand if you love using paint! I’m over here with both hands in the air, because I will freely admit I’m a paint-a-holic. Whether it’s chalk paint, acrylic paint, fabric paint, watercolor paint…you name it, I love to use it! Over the years, I’ve done quite a variety of paint projects; everything from the “dirty pour” fluid art to painting furniture to give it new life. I’ve painted windows, faces, and occasionally the cat. Today, I want to share with you my most recent paint project, a piece of wall art that’s a little outside the box {or paint bottle}! Take a look…

You’ll need:

For this project, I really wanted to do something different that I’d never tried before, so I decided instead of using a normal stencil, I used lace as a resist method for my design. I also wanted to do something a little out of the ordinary paint-wise, so I grabbed these fun little Stencil Sprays from Plaid. They’re acrylic paint in a 2 oz tube with a spray nozzle attached. All you have to do is shake well, then spray the paint wherever you want it to go! So fun, right?

Step 1: Position your lace on the canvas.

You’ll want to pull it tightly and secure the lace on the back with tape to hold it in place.

Step 2: Spray your colors!

I started with purple at the bottom of my canvas. Then, I did bright blue at the top and dark blue in the middle.

I kept layering my colors, really letting the paint go on thick in the center, which formed come really cool little splotches and cells.

Step 3: Remove the lace.

You want to do this while the paint is still wet so it doesn’t get stuck to the canvas. Do your best to pick it straight up of the surface so that nothing smears.

I had a little bit of color bleeding at the top, but I think it still turned out looking really interesting!

Step 4: Letter or stencil the word of your choice.

I hand lettered mine using the faux calligraphy technique, but you could also easily use a stencil and fill it in with white acrylic paint instead. Either way, make sure your canvas is completely dry first!

This is a quick project that’s really a lot of fun to do. Kids love using the stencil spray too, so it’s something you can do with the whole family if you like. What do you think?

  1. Hi Amy,
That looks absolutely gorgeous! My favorite of all the paint projects you published recently! Too bad these colors are not (yet?) available in Germany…
BTW: I love your blog and all your creative projects. Came here via the hand lettering templates first.
    Kind regards, Britta

  2. This is a great project! I haven’t used these paints before, but I’ll be looking for them now! The lace stencil at the bottom almost looks like a fence! I love this.

  3. Thank you for sharing! It’s a beautiful idea, and a great way to use lace as a reverse stencil. Maybe next time you can try a doily for a circular effect?
