Hand Lettered Holiday Dishware & a Silhouette Cameo 3 Giveaway!

The holidays are approaching fast, and it’s time to start thinking about festive craft projects! If you’re a regular reader here at One Artsy Mama, you know I’m all about projects that are quick, affordable, and easy to create but still look fabulous! Recently, on a shopping trip to Target, I noticed some really pretty round plates that were white with gold hand lettered holiday messages. I decided it would be fun and less expensive to create my own version at home; here’s how it turned out!

Hand Lettered Holiday Dishware

I was excited to put my own spin on this project because that allowed me to use the message I wanted, my own hand lettering, and any type of dishware, not just a round plate. You can follow the steps below to decorate plates of all shapes and sizes, mugs, wine glasses, serving plates, bowls, and more and create your own set of matching holiday dishes in no time.

For me, the first step was lettering my design. I used my iPad Pro and Apple Pencil in the Procreate app to create the image. I’m planning to post soon about how this works, but basically, the Apple Pencil can act just like your favorite brush pen and respond to how much pressure you use on the screen to create gorgeous hand lettering. I use the exact same technique to letter on the iPad that I use with a pen and paper.  You can also do your lettering on paper, photograph or scan it, then save it to your computer.

Once my image was created, I saved it and loaded into my Silhouette Studio Software. Next, I traced it, then sized it to fit my plate and mug. If you want to create a custom design like I did, just follow these steps with your own image. If you’d like to use my design, you can download the free cut file here!

Once you have your design, whether it’s your own or mine, you’re ready to move on to create your dishware!

Step 1: Send the design to your Silhouette machine and cut it from adhesive gold vinyl. Also, cut small snowflakes from gold and silver vinyl.

I got my snowflakes from the Silhouette Store online. There are lots to choose from! Before cutting, measure your plate, cup, or platter to see how large your design should be. My plate design was about 4″, and my cup was about 2 1/2″.

Step 2: Cut a piece of transfer paper that’s slightly larger than your design.

Step 3: Peel the backing off of the transfer paper and adhere it directly on top of your vinyl design.

Press firmly and rub to make sure it sticks!

Step 4: Carefully remove the backing of the gold vinyl.

This is the trickiest part. Go slowly, and make sure not to pull too hard, because your letters could rip. Now, your design should be stuck to the transfer paper with the sticky side facing you.

Step 5: Place the design on the surface of your plate. Rub the top of the transfer paper firmly to help the vinyl adhere to the dish.

PS. Make sure that you clean your surface first and that it’s completely dry before you do this step.

Step 6: Gently remove the transfer paper.

Ta-da! Your vinyl should be adhered to your plate! If you like a simple, less-is-more kind of design, you can stop right here and you’ve got a classy finished product. If you want to add a bit more pizzazz, head on to the next step!

Step 7: Add snowflakes wherever you like!

The snowflakes were small enough that I was able to peel them off like stickers and just apply them to the plate without using transfer paper.

That’s it! Now you have a festive, pretty plate that’s all ready for holiday dining and entertaining!

I absolutely love how this set turned out and can’t wait to use it this holiday season! These dishes are safe to use and to wash; you can even put them in the dishwasher, but I recommend hand washing just to be sure they stay in the best possible condition.
