Hand Lettered Mugs

Hand Lettered Mugs

Unless you’re brand new around here, I’m pretty sure you already know about my love affair with coffee. Even the quickest glance at my Instagram account will show you what I mean! So, it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that I’ve been wanting to create a mug with my own hand lettered designs on it for awhile now. I’ve made my own mugs using paint markers, but I wanted something really legit, something that was screen-printed and professional looking. Then, one day last week, I got an email with a code offering me a free mug from Shutterfly. I hurried over to the site and created one, and when it came, it was even cooler than I thought it would be to see my lettering right there on a mug! So much so, that I went and ordered another one featuring two different designs!

Many of you who saw my mug on Instagram have been asking if you can buy one, and unfortunately {although I’m in the process of begging Shutterfly to offer my designs}, so far the answer is no. But what I can do is show you how to go about creating your own using lettered designs that you create! {This is NOT a sponsored post, I just want to share with you how to do what I do. The links, however, are affiliate links.}

Step 1: Create your lettered design{s}.

If you’re new to lettering, check out my step by step tutorial and see how absolutely doable it is!

Step 2: Scan or photograph your design{s} and edit to make sure you have a bright white background.

For a black and white design, I typically start by adjusting the Saturation to zero. Then, I increase the Highlights to 100. Finally, I adjust the shadows and/or contrast until I get a clean, sharp look. For more about digitizing your lettering, check out this post.

Step 3: Open PicMonkey and choose “Design” from the top menu.

Step 4: Crop your design to 1600 x 630 pixels.

Step 5: Add your design{s}.

Click on the butterfly icon on the far left, then select the “add your own” option at the top of the overlays menu. Choose your designs one at a time and place them on the canvas.

You can do a one-sided mug, use the same design on both sides, or use two different designs like I did. Make sure not to place either design too close to the edge.

Step 6: Save this file and upload it to Shutterfly.

Keep PicMonkey open, though, in case you need to make any edits.

Step 7: Choose your mug and add your design.

If your design is cut off inside the blue box, go back to PicMonkey and reposition your designs so they’re closer to the center. If not, proceed to order!

Step 8: Check out using CHRISTMAS20 and your mug will be free through Tuesday, 7-26 {it’s a $20 off a $20 purchase coupon!}

Since the mug comes to a little less than $20, I added a few 15 cent photo prints until I reached the required total for the coupon to work!

That’s all there is to it! You just pay the shipping and the mug will show up at your home, ready for your coffee or tea!
