Box Tops for Education & a DIY Plant Project

This fall, Little Crafter will be attending a new school. While every school certainly has things that make it unique, there are some things all schools have in common, like the fact that they could all use extra cash to benefit students. Whether it would go toward supplies, furniture, programs, or something else, every school could make good use of extra money. There’s a really easy way to help your child’s school earn cash, just by buying things you already use and need. If you’re familiar with the Box Tops for Education program, you already know what I’m about to share. If not, here’s how easy it is to get involved…

Step 1: Purchase products marked with the Box Tops for Education label.

Step 2: Clip the labels.

Step 3: Send the labels to your school.

Step 4: Each Box Tops coupon earns 10 cents. Schools can earn up to $20,000 each year!

So many of Reynolds Consumer Products brands participate in Box Tops, and lots of them are items you need to have on hand all the time, like Hefty® Trash Bags in a variety of sizes and types. You can also find Box Tops on Reynolds® Parchment Paper, StayBrite® Baking Cups, Cookie Baking Sheets, Bakeware Pans, Slow Cooker Liners, and Oven Bags. If you’re entertaining, look for Box Tops on various Hefty® cups, plates, bowls, and platters.

Even though the school year hasn’t started yet, you can collect Box Tops over the summer and send them in when your kids or grandkids head back in the fall. Plus, the more people who are collecting, the more money the school will earn, right? To help your school get as much as possible out of this program, encourage your friends, neighbors, and family members to save their Box Tops too! Here is a quick and easy little craft you can make to give to the people in your life to remind them to collect Box Tops for your child’s school.

Box Tops for Education

You’ll need:

Small terracotta pot
FolkArt Painted Finishes Concrete {Light Concrete and Dark Concrete}
Paintbrush {mine is the FolkArt Painted Finishes brush}
Tiny clothespin
Paint or Paint Marker in your school’s color{s}
Potting Soil
Herbs, flowers, or seeds
White card stock
Paper punch
Markers

Creating your project:

Step 1: First, apply a coat of Dark Concrete to the surface of your pot.

Instead of brushing it on like normal paint, dab it onto the surface so that it maintains its thick, grainy consistency. One coat should give you total coverage. Let it dry completely before moving on.

Step 2: Next, dab Light Concrete onto your pot as highlights anywhere you like.

I like to offload my brush a little first so that my highlights blend in a little better. Add as much or as little of the lighter paint as you like to get the effect you want.

Step 3: Now, plant something in your pot!

I used lavender from my garden, but you could also use any type of small flower or even seeds instead.

Step 4: Paint the top of your clothespin.

My son’s main school color is red, so we used a red paint marker, which is less messy and easier for little hands to do.

Step 5: Punch and letter your note.

I used a Scallop Circle punch, but you can use any shape you like. Then, I used markers to letter, “Help Our School Grow with Box Tops.” If you’re new to hand lettering, check out my Whimsical Print and Faux Calligraphy tutorials to see how I wrote this message. Or, you can easily print something out on the computer instead!

Step 6: Finally, clip the reminder to the flower pot and give it to a friend, neighbor, or family member to remind them about saving Box Tops!

These are so quick, affordable, and simple to create! Kids of all ages can get involved and help with this craft too. Why not make a few this summer and give them out in your neighborhood? They’ll brighten someone’s day, plus hopefully help you collect more Box Tops, earning more money for your school!
