Geometric Clay Jewelry

Thanks to Sculpey Polyform for sponsoring today’s post and letting us try out some fun new products! All opinions are honestly my own.

Friends, you all know I love working with clay and I love a good jewelry project. When I can combine the two, it’s even better! One of my favorite things about my job as a blogger is getting to try out new products and show you how I used them, and I’m excited to do that today. Here’s a look at how I created a Geometric Jewelry Set with help from some fun new tools from Sculpey!

Geometric Clay Jewelry

First, here’s a tutorial for the Layered Crescent Necklace.

Materials:
Sculpey Premo! Accents Clay
Sculpey Design It Templates: Jewelry Shapes
 Acrylic Roller
Sculpey Clay Tool Starter Set
– Foil and baking sheet
– 6 Jump Rings
– Necklace chain
– Lobster Clasp
– Wire Cutters and Needle Nose Pliers

Sculpey Supplies

This project was my first attempt at using the new Design It Jewelry Templates. The package contains 40 shapes including rectangles, triangles, chevron, semi-circles, and crescents in various sizes.

Step 1: Roll out your clay to about 1/4″ thickness with an acrylic roller or rolling pin. Make sure all your clay tools are used specifically for clay and never for food.

Step 2: Place the shape{s} of your choice onto the clay. Press gently, then use a clay tool to carefully cut around the shape. If you don’t have tools, a plastic knife can do the trick, but it won’t look as smooth.

Step 3: Use a clay tool {or a toothpick in a pinch} to poke holes in your shapes where you will want jump rings to go. Be sure to do this before baking because you’ll be unable to once the clay is hardened.

Step 4: Bake according to package directions. Mine baked for 15 minutes at 275 degrees Farenheit. Remove from the oven and allow the pieces to cool completely before moving on.

Step 5: Attach jump rings to the holes you placed on the sides of each crescent shape.

Step 6: Determine how long you want your necklace to be, then cut two pieces of chain; one for the longer layer and one for the shorter. Attach the ends of the chain to the jump rings on your clay pieces.

Step 7: Cut both chains in the center. Add one end of both chains to a jump ring, then add the other end of both chains to a jump ring attached to a clasp on the other side.

Ta-da! There you have it, a layered necklace! If you prefer, you can also wear them one at a time.

Once I saw how easy it was to work with the Design It Templates, I decided to make a coordinating pair of earrings and to try out another of the new products on them, Clay Decals. Here’s how I created them.

Materials:
Sculpey Premo! Accents Clay
Sculpey Design It Templates: Jewelry Shapes
Sculpey Clay Decals
 Acrylic Roller
Sculpey Clay Tool Starter Set
– Foil and baking sheet
– Scissors
– Ear wires
– 2 Eye Pins
– 2 Jump Rings
– 2 Black Crystal Beads
– Needle Nose Pliers and Wire Cutters

Steps 1-2: Same as the necklace! Roll out your clay to 1/4″ thickness, place your shape templates on top {this time I chose triangles} and cut them out.

Step 3: Time to play with the decals! They come in sheets, as pictured below. I chose the pattern I wanted to use, then cut out two triangles the same size as my clay ones by using the same template as a pattern.

Step 4: Soak the cut decals in water as directed on the package, then gently slide off the backing. Apply the decals on top of your clay shapes, design side up, and gently absorb any excess water by blotting with a paper towel.

Step 5: Carefully poke holes in the triangles using a clay tool {or toothpick}

Step 6: Bake according to package directions. Again, mine took 15 minutes at 275 degrees Farenheit. Remove from the oven and cool completely.

Step 7: Attach a jump ring in each hole. {Remember to always twist jump rings open rather than pulling them open.}

Step 8: Place a crystal on an eye pin and form a wire loop on the other end. If you’ve never made a wire loop before, check out this simple photo tutorial for step-by-step instructions.

Step 9: Attach one end of the eye pin to the jump ring on the clay shape, then attach the other end to the ear wire.

Now your earrings are ready to wear!

Sculpey Earrings

I love how they turned out; they’re original and fun, and they have a bit of a retro 80’s vibe that I {as a child of the 80’s} can’t resist.
What do you think? What would you make with these templates and decals? The possibilities are endless!
