Chalkboard Scripture Sign

This past month, in case you haven’t noticed, I’ve been all about creating decorative projects to make our new house look and feel like home. Since we have a few more rooms now, we have more wall space…which obviously means I need to make some new art, right? One of the things I came up with was a chalkboard sign to hang in our Master Bedroom that also shows the way to the Master Bath, in a manner of speaking. Here’s how I made it…

chalkboard sign

Materials:
– 12×12 chalkboard sign {I got mine at Michaels}
– Elmer’s Painters large white paint marker
– 12×12 card stock
– Silhouette Cameo electronic cutting machine and software
– painters’ tape

Chalkboard Sign

Step 1: Design and cut your words from a piece of 12×12 card stock.
I used the font “a song for jennifer bold” for the print words and “French Script MS” for the words “clean heart.” The arrow is one of three echo park arrows I downloaded from the Silhouette online store. It doesn’t matter what color card stock you use because it’s just going to become your stencil, not part of the finished sign.

Step 2: Punch out the letters so that the piece of card stock becomes a stencil. Place it on your chalkboard sign and tape it in place using painters’ tape.
Just a quick note about the sign itself, it came with the metal backing and frame as well as the rope hanger. It’s regularly $7.99 at Michaels in their section with the chalkboard items and galvanized buckets. {I got it 50% off thanks to their big sale last week!} If you can’t find this specific one, though, you can easily paint a board with chalkboard or black paint yourself and add a hanger to achieve a similar effect.

Step 3: Color inside the stencil with Elmer’s Painters.
I wanted a solid, very bright white, so I went over each letter three times.

Step 4: Remove the stencil and hang your sign!
The arrow is pointing right to the Master Bathroom, which makes me smile when I see it.

Before I wrap up the post, though, I have to show you this photo. What is it, you ask? That, my friend, is solidarity. If you’ve ever had a craft fail, you are not alone. In fact, honestly, I had not one but TWO failed attempts at this project before I got my good one. Here’s what I learned.

cleanheartfail

1. Do not attempt to use adhesive vinyl as a stencil. At least not for a design as large as 12×12. When I tried peeling it off, it just got all stuck to itself. Then it ripped. It never even made it onto the surface of my project. Fail #1.

2. Do not attempt to use adhesive cardstock as a stencil on chalkboard. Things went great this time until it came to actually removing the stencil. Apparently the adhesive did what it was supposed to…it stuck. You can see the mess that resulted when I tried to pull it off. I ended up having to use an entirely new chalkboard for my third attempt. This one is still sitting in the craft room looking exactly like…this. A hot mess. Fail #2.

Yes, friends, even the professionals fail. All the time. But, hey, I make the mistakes so you don’t have to! Here’s one more look at how the project turns out when you do it what I like to call the right way. What do you think?
