Disney Party Shape Sorting Activity

Have you heard about the new Disney Imagicademy app? We’re throwing a little Artsy-style party this weekend to let some of our smallest friends test it out and tell you all about it, and in the meantime we’ve been sharing some fun Disney-themed invitations and favors too; have you seen those? Of course, no party is complete without fun games and activities, so we came up with this Shape Sorting Activity based on one of the parts of Mickey’s Magical Math World!

Shape Sorting Activity

Basically, the app is all about adventures with math, including shapes, and the setting is outer space {how cool is that?}. Plus, in addition to your favorite Disney characters, there are robots involved! I’m telling you, it’s got everything a kiddo could want. So, our party activity involves doing just what you do in the app…sorting shapes. To do it, I created fifteen shaped beanbags and the kids will get to choose their own “robot arms”, aka harmless kitchen utensils, to use when doing the sorting. Here’s how to make your own version…

Materials:
– Oly*Fun in assorted colors {You can also use felt or fabric, but this stuff is my favorite!}
– Poly-Fil Poly-Pellets Stuffing Beads {Or beans or rice}
– Sewing machine and thread
– Scissors

Step 1: Trace shapes onto your Oly*Fun {or felt/fabric} and cut two of each color.
I traced around a glass for the circles, then cut out patterns from paper for the other shapes.

Step 2: Pin the two pieces for each shape together. Sew around the edges, leaving an opening large enough to fill the shape with stuffing beads. If you really want to get fancy and turn the shapes inside out so you don’t see the seams, feel free. In this house, ain’t nobody got time for that. We’re going for quick and easy, people. Moving on.

Step 3: Fill each shape with Poly-Pellets. Or beans or rice or Poly-fil or whatever you have on hand that’s non-toxic and stuffable. Pin the opening shut.

Step 4: Sew the shape the rest of the way shut, making sure to keep the stuffing pieces out of the way of the needle. Trim your loose threads, and you’re good to go!

Now your shapes are ready to be sorted!

They can also be sorted by color too…double the fun, right?

You can have the kiddos sort the shapes into labeled bins, buckets, bags, or just plain piles. I think half the fun is using the “robot arms” to pick them up and sort them…but you’ll have to try it for yourself and let me know what you think.  Are there little folks in your life who would enjoy this activity? If so, be sure to stay tuned in the coming days to find out more about the app and the party! See ya soon!
