Stenciled Pet Photo Frame

Did you know there’s a new member of the Artsy Family? In case you haven’t seen all the photos and status updates I’ve been posting about her, meet Fuzzy Sparkles! Isn’t she gorgeous? Those eyes…aah! They get me every time! She’s a Bengal, so she doesn’t shed and she doesn’t bother our allergies either, which is just amazing.
I got this great photo of her that really shows off just how gorgeous she is, so I decided to make a frame for it. When I saw these FolkArt Stencil1 Animal Print stencils, I thought they’d be perfect for getting the look of her multi-colored striped fur. Here’s how I did it, using FolkArt Stencils and Paints.
Materials:
– FolkArt Stencil1 Stencil
– FolkArt Stencil Creme: Natural Colors
– FolkArt Stencil Adhesive
– Multisurface Paint
– Stencil Brush
– Wooden frame
Step 1: Paint the entire surface {I used grey}. Allow it to dry completely before you attempt to do any stenciling!
Step 2: Apply Stencil Adhesive and adhere your stencil to the right side of the frame. Dip your brush in the stencil creme color of your choice and gently dab the color onto the exposed areas. My stencil was smaller than the height of my frame, so when I was finished the first part, I repositioned it, lining it up so that the design is continuous. Repeat, blending the creme as desired.
Prior to this project, I never used Stencil Creme before, but now I don’t want to use anything else! I seriously love this stuff! It’s an oil-based “dry brush” paint, so it doesn’t drip or run underneath the stencil. The other awesome benefit is that the cremes are really easy to blend. I wanted to recreate the feel of Fuzzy’s actual colors, so I decided to try out that blending by using four of the stencil cremes…Auburn Brown, which I used first, Sable Brown, Jet Black, and Gold Medal. Here’s how it looked when I applied Sable Brown over parts of the already-stenciled Auburn Brown. Notice how it’s a bit darker in some areas?
Then I added touches of the Gold Medal, which has a really warm, shimmery look to it. Can you see the areas where I blended it in?
Finally, I went back and added some Jet Black in a few spots.
Because the Stencil Adhesive is totally repositionable, it’s easy to replace the stencil each time and line it up right where it needs to be. It’s easy to apply, dries clear, and washes off the stencil with soap and water.
Once everything is dry, all that’s left to do is add the photo of your furry friend!
If you don’t have a furry friend, or animal print isn’t your thing {honestly, it’s not usually mine either…} there are lots of other FolkArt Stencil1 stencil designs to choose from, like the Nautical set I used when I made my Framed Nautical Home Décor. There’s also a set with swallows, another with a bee, a cherry branch, bicycles, a flag, geometric patterns, and lots more choices; something for everyone! The stencils are designed by artist Ed Roth, who I got to meet back in January at the CHA MegaShow. He’s a really fun and interesting guy with awesome designs. As a side note, you can see the swallow and bee designs in this pic…
The FolkArt Stencil1 stencils and FolkArt paints are available at Michaels if you want to make your own Pet Photo Frame or something entirely different!

That stencil is perfect for Ms. Fuzzy Sparkles! Does she really not shed? Gosh, I’m so jealous! I didn’t even know there were hypoallergenic cats so I googled it and apparently my cat is one too (or at least, as hypoallergenic as cats can be). But she sheds ridiculously! And it’s the same color as the couch…
Great for pet lovers 🙂
Thanks!
What a fun pet frame! My kiddos would love to have a photo of our pet. 🙂
Your frame actually looks like the cat!
I love the colors you chose…it really looks like tiger stripes! 😀
The stencil looks just like the color of the cute kitty! I love it!
You did such a great job of adding layers of colour on the stencil, Amy! I love how it turned out!
