Coffee-Mate Inspired Circle Coasters

Coffee Inspired Coasters

Coffee.  You know I love it.  And many of you do too.

It wakes us up.

It makes us happy.

It can even inspire us.

Seriously!  Some of my best, most creative ideas have come to me when I’m drinking a cup of my favorite coffee.  {The others usually come to me in the shower, but that’s completely beside the point.}  I know I’m not the only one who brainstorms and/or creates things with coffee in hand, right?  I bet lots of you are in the same boat.  And so are other designers and artists all over the world.  As a matter of fact, design star David Bromstad has partnered with Coffee-mate and Target, making a splash with limited edition bottle designs inspired by coffee and Coffee-mate.  The new David Bromstad designed bottles (French Vanilla and Hazelnut flavors) will be available exclusively at Target stores nationwide.
I love the art on these, don’t you?  In fact, the Hazelnut design reminds me of one of my favorite artists, Wassily Kandinsky, whose work was all about shapes {particularly circles} and color!  As I looked at the concentric circles in David Bromstad’s design, it made me want to create a Kandinsky-inspired project myself…and what better to go with my coffee and creamer than coasters?!  Here is what this bottle design inspired to make…and how you can do it too!

ABSTRACT CIRCLE COASTERS

Circle Coasters

TIME REQUIRED: 10 minutes
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: basic/easy
SPECIAL SKILLS/TOOLS: none

Materials:
– blank white ceramic tile {you can get these at the local home/hardware store for less than a quarter a piece}
– assorted colors of tissue paper
– scissors
– Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe Gloss Formula
– sponge brush
– felt
– pencil and assorted round objects

Step 1: Trace circles onto your tissue paper and cut out. You can use a glass, container lids, coins, and anything else you can find that’s round and a good size for your coaster.

Step 2: Brush the entire coaster with a thin coat of Mod Podge.

Step 3: Place large tissue paper circles on top of your tile wherever you like.

Step 4: Decide where you want the smaller circles to go and place them on your tile. I like to make some concentric circles, some overlapping, and some that go off the edges of the tile.

Step 5: Paint a thin coat of Mod Podge over the entire coaster. Do this carefully, as the tissue paper is thin and can move or tear.

Step 6: Cut a square of felt the size of your tile and glue it to the bottom to protect your furniture from being scratched by the rough, unfinished side.   Now they’re all ready to use!  Because we’re using the Dishwasher Safe formula, these coasters should hold up nicely whether you use hot or cold drinks on top as well as if a drink happens to spill.   Ahhh.  Just perfect for my iced coffee…which, as you can see, is already on its way to being all gone!
