Cat in the Hat Treat Holder
Hey, friends! This is the time of year we get to start thinking about one of my favorite children’s authors, Dr. Seuss. It’s so fun watching Little Crafter learn to read and enjoy some of the same books I loved as a child, like Green Eggs and Ham. He is a huge Seuss fan, and his particular favorite {as you may remember from Halloween} is anything involving the Cat in the Hat. He reads the books, he watches the cartoons, he snuggles his stuffed Cat, and whenever he can, he wears the full costume too. So, I thought it would be fun to celebrate Seuss by creating this fun and simple Cat in the Hat Treat Holder.
Cat in the Hat Treat Holder
– cardboard tube {mine was a TP roll in a former life}
– red and white Duck Tape {mine was provided by the Duck Brand}
– white cardstock
– scissors
– pencil
– candy
– Elmer’s glue
The great thing about this project is that not only does it take about five minutes to make, it’s also a fun way to recycle your cardboard tubes and repurpose them into something useful! I think the Lorax would approve.
Step 1: Cover your tube with alternating stripes of red and white Duck Tape and cut off any excess. If you want it to be legit, the Cat’s hat has five stripes, with red at the top and bottom.
Step 2: Trace one end of the tube onto a piece of white cardstock. Place a piece of red tape on the other side of the cardstock, then cut out the circle to make a top for the hat.
Step 3: Trace a larger circle onto white cardstock and cut out to be the hat’s brim. Fun tip: I found that tracing the center hole of my roll of Duck Tape made the perfect size brim for my hat.
Step 4: Glue the tube in the center of the white circle and let it dry completely.
All that’s left to do is fill it with candy, place the lid on top, and you’re done!
One thing you may want to note about these is that they work best when you assemble them wherever you want them to “live.” The weight of all that candy is a lot for one little piece of cardstock to hold, so if you fill a bunch of them and then try to pick them up, they might explode and you’ll have candy everywhere. Not that I know…*cough*… Also, I wanted mine to be easy for little hands to get the candy out, so I just sat the lid on top to look cute. If you want to seal it by gluing it down, you can, but just know that then the hat is going to get destroyed in the opening process. Trust me.
Hope you enjoy this fun little project as much as Little Crafter did!
Now, whether you make this craft or something totally different, get busy creating! As Dr. Seuss would say, “Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try!”

“If you want to be legit…” hahaha! Now I’m wondering if you just KNOW how many stripes there are because of LC’s fan status, or if you were pulling out your Dr. Seuss books to check 🙂
