Birthday in a Box: Our Life in a Click
How do you celebrate a 19 year old's birthday when she's away at college?  How about this fun idea...a birthday in a box!  This post almost made me tear up as I thought about the fact that someday Little Crafter could be off at college and I wouldn't get to celebrate his special day with him. Then I remembered that his birthday is in the summer.  Whew. :)

Well, friends, that's all the features we have time for today...hope you enjoyed them; I sure did!  See you back here at 9PM EST for a brand new Shine on Fridays!  Show us what ya got!

Hey, friends!  The next holiday on the horizon is St. Patrick's Day, so I thought I'd share a few of our projects from St. Patty's Days Past that you might have missed.  This first one is actually the very first blog post I ever did here on One Artsy Mama, believe it or not!  It was back when I had about six followers, and they were all members of my family.  Safe to say, you probably never read it, so take a peek!

Patterned Bangle Bracelet

  Last week, as I was perusing Craftgawker, I saw the most gorgeous DIY bangles.  I clicked for the tutorial and found myself at My Poppet reading about how to make Harlequin Bangles.  I still have a stash of fabulous wooden bangles and other unfinished wood supplies from Tiff at Banglewood Craft Supplies, so it took me all of thirty seconds to run downstairs, grab one, and get started making my own.

The major difference between my bracelet and the original is that she used origami paper and Mod Podge, while I decided to try using adhesive vinyl instead.  Here's what you need to make my version:

Materials:
- wooden bangle {the flatter the better for this project}!
- adhesive vinyl in desired colors
- scissors
- paper, pencil, and ruler
- Mod Podge {optional}

Cintia over at My Poppet does a great job giving the full tutorial, so for more info on exactly how to make these, so be sure to check it out for more information and step by step instructions.

As for me, confession time...for whatever inexplicable reason, even though I measured and sketched my pieces ahead of time like Cintia recommends, somehow it didn't come out perfectly and I ended up having to trim a few pieces to make everything fit right.  If anyone can explain that to me, please do!  In any case, it's still passable and no one will notice from a distance, right?  Right?!

What colors would you use?  I'm thinking I need another one with corals and pinks.

Living Locket Charms

 Friends, I need your help!  I have a really exciting announcement for you: on April 17, I get to give away something really cool to one of you.  Kristy from Origami Owl is generously donating a Living Locket to a lucky One Artsy Mama reader.  If you're not familiar with Living Lockets, they're super cool little glass pendants that will hold the charms of your choice.  That's where the help part comes in.   I need you all to help me choose which four charms to get for my necklace!

I've narrowed it down to ten...here are the choices and why I'd pick them.  Take a look, then take a minute to vote and let me know what you think the perfect combo would be for this Artsy Mama.

 Choices 1-3: Without a doubt I need something in my locket that represents Little Crafter.
 My choices for this are either:
1. August Birthstone Heart
2. August Birthstone Boy
3. Sign Language "I Love You" {this is a special thing for us; we sign it to each other all the time and it's in one of our favorite books, The Kissing Hand}.
Choices 4-10: The remaining 3 charms should be things that represent me; what I love and who I am as a person, wife, mama, etc.
 The options are {in no particular order}
4. Coffee cup {Starbucks...need I say more?}
5. Cross {I heart Jesus}
6. Shell {for my love of the beach, particularly Myrtle Beach}
7. Artist Palette {One Artsy Mama}
8. Laptop {blogging}
9. Purple stone {my favorite color and Ravens color}
10. Music notes {piano, singing, dance}

 See my dilemma?  I would totally put all 10 of these in my locket...except that they won't fit.  Pretty please help me narrow it down to four by voting below!

Coral Memory Wire Bracelet

Spring is {hopefully} just around the corner, friends, and all of my reliable fashion sources seem to agree on one thing: the hot color for this season is going to be CORAL!  {Hence, I bought the infamous coral skirt you've probably seen on Facebook}.

One of the easiest ways to add a new color into your wardrobe is to start with some fun jewelry.  There's plenty of coral jewelry in the stores right now since it's going to be such a popular color...in fact, I just saw a bunch today in Target...but I already had these gorgeous coral shell beads in my stash, so I decided to make myself a bracelet.  Here it is:

coral memory wire shell bead bracelet

Materials:
- crimp tubes
- needlenose pliers and wire cutters
- crimp tool {optional, but super-helpful!}

A quick note about the coral beads I used; mine are from Consumer Crafts and they still have them available.  They cost less than $2 for a 12" strand which is more than enough to make this bracelet and a pair of matching earrings.  This is not a sponsored post {although I wish it were!}, I ordered and paid for them on my own and just wanted to share the deal with you.

STEP 1: Cut desired length of memory wire.  I cut off about 4 coils.  You can always trim the excess later.  Use pliers to bend one end into a loop.

STEP 2: Thread a crimp tube onto your wire until it's about 1" from your end loop.  Use crimp tool to secure it, or simply squeeze it tightly with flat pliers.

STEP 3: Slide a bead onto the wire and let it rest against your crimp tube.  Thread another crimp tube on and secure it on the other side of the bead using your tool or pliers.

STEP 4: Repeat step 3, continuing the pattern "crimp tube, bead, crimp tube" and leaving about 3/4" space between beads until your bracelet is the desired length.  Cut excess wire and form a loop on the other end.

Now your bracelet is ready to wear!

You can give it as many beads and loops as you like to suit your own personal style.  Another option is that you can simply string all the beads side by side, leaving out the crimp tubes, which gives you a different look...see my Memory Wire Shell Bracelet tutorial for more photos and step by step instructions on that variation.

Anyway, I'm loving how this turned out, and I'm excited about the coral trend!

I think it goes really well with my not-exactly-coral-more-like-road-cone-orange skirt, don't you?  {oh, and if you're wondering, the cool turquoise watch is a Target special.}

What about you; do you plan to work coral into your wardrobe this Spring?  I'd love to see photos of your best outfits!

Easy Breakfast in Artsy Land #DeliciousPairings

Ok, friends, pop quiz...what's my favorite place to get coffee?

If you've been part of the One Artsy Mama community for more than five minutes, I hope you immediately yelled, "STARBUCKS!"  Which, of course, would make you 100% correct.

You get an A+ on the quiz and if I could, I'd give you a gold star.  Instead, you'll just have to earn gold stars on your Starbucks card and think of me.

You also get extra credit if you can name my favorite thing to order at Starbucks {answers at the end of the post, so keep reading}!  As you already know, I frequent the local Starbucks several times a week with Little Crafter for breakfast and treat dates, but one thing I'd never really tried is brewing my own Starbucks coffee at home.  Recently, we were in Walmart, and I noticed this Delicious Pairings display in the bakery section.

The Starbucks logo caught my eye in a big way, so I pulled Little Crafter {who was more interested in the donuts} over to see what it was all about.  They had various kinds of ground coffee on display and each type of roast had an accompanying sign suggesting what kinds of food would be a good match for it.  Kind of like how some restaurants suggest certain wines with certain entrees...pretty cool, huh?

I'm not really much of an expert on "plain" coffee since I usually order my "fru-fru" drinks, so I started reading the descriptions to decide what to buy.  I noticed that the Dark Roasts go well with a lot of different foods.  I'm not a huge nut fan {or roasted vegetables either}, but caramelized sugar, milk and dark chocolate are right up my alley!!  Any coffee that pairs well with chocolate has to be a win, right?  I picked up a bag of the Dark French Roast, then moved on to the baked goods.  I decided that I'd grab something tasty we could have for an easy breakfast at home.

I was tempted by lots of good looking muffins and chocolate items, but since this was going to be breakfast for Little Crafter as well as just for me, chocolate wasn't an option {I cannot for the life of me figure out why he doesn't like it}!  We both love cinnamon rolls, so I picked up a pack of the Gourmet Cinnamon Rolls with White Icing.  He's an icing-a-haulic...whenever he orders a dessert somewhere, he tells the person to bring him "the one with the most icing."  You should have seen how big his eyes got when he saw how well-iced these rolls were!

The perfect pairing?  We didn't have to wait long to find out.  I was glad to have them on hand because the weather here in Artsy Land has been a little unpredictable lately.  You'll wake up to sunshine, then ten minutes later it starts snowing hard and looks like this.  A few hours later, the sun comes out again.  You never know whether it's a good time to go out or if you should just stay in.

So, on a snowy morning, it's the perfect time to have our own at-home breakfast date to start the day.  Little Crafter and I like to sit at the "tall table" in the kitchen with the two tall stool-chairs and pretend we're in a coffee shop.

The coffee smelled ah-MA-zing while it was brewing, and mmm...look at that icing-y cinnamon-y yumminess!

I tried the coffee by itself first {in my Ravens Super Bowl Champion tumbler, of course} to see how I liked the Dark French Roast.  Now, let it be duly noted that I am a coffee wuss.  Hubby drinks his black...I like a little coffee with my cream and sugar.  My first impression was that it was a little on the strong side, although for a dark roast I suppose that comes with the territory.  I added a little more cream and sugar, then tried it again.  Much better.  Now it was sweet enough for my taste, but it still had that rich, full-bodied taste I've come to expect from Starbucks coffee.

Time to try the Gourmet Cinnamon Roll.  Talk about sweet cinnamon-y deliciousness!  It was just the right texture, had lots of tasty cinnamon, and the icing to roll ratio was ideal for two icing lovers.  Look at Little Crafter's face...he totally thinks he's getting away with something eating this treat as a meal!

And, then it was time to try the coffee and cinnamon roll together.  Isn't it funny how sometimes the flavor of one thing brings out the flavor in another?  That's what happened.  The deep, rich flavor of the coffee really complimented the sweetness of the cinnamon and the icing.  Definitely a tasty at-home alternative to going out for a breakfast date!

Little Crafter, of course, didn't get to try the coffee, but he did attack that cinnamon roll.  As with any new food, he had to lick it first to see what he thought.  It was love at first taste, and he finished almost the whole thing, which is quite impressive for a four-year-old tummy.

We always play games and read books when we go on breakfast dates, which we can also easily do in our pretend coffee shop at home.  Why is it that he always wins?

I think both of us are more than happy to make easy breakfast dates at home a regular part of our week.

Oh, and by the way, my Starbucks in-store favorites are seasonal.  In the summer, I love the coconut mocha {iced, hot, and frappuccino}, in the fall I love salted caramel mocha {iced is best!}, winter is peppermint mocha {hot!}, and spring is chai latte {iced or hot}.  Yummm!

What's your favorite easy at-home breakfast?
