Mommy’s Time Out Glass

This past week, my friend’s brother and sister-in-law had their first baby…an adorable little boy!  My friend thought that it would be funny in light of the new baby to give her sister-in-law painted stemware for Christmas that said, “Mommy’s Time Out.”   So, she commissioned me for the project!  Take a look at how I made it using the glass paints I was gifted from DecoArt!

Materials:
– stemware, clean and dry {I advise cleaning it with rubbing alcohol before painting}
– glass paints {I used blue, black, and crystal Gloss Enamels}
– paintbrush

Step 1: Paint the clock.  I used a paintbrush and my transparent blue paint to create a circle on the front of the glass.  I freehanded it, but you can also use a stencil if you want a perfect circle.  Then, I used my 3D Gloss Enamel writer in crystal to paint on a 12, 3, 6, and 9 around the clock face and put two short lines between each set of numbers.

Step 2: Write the words and add swirls with your 3D Enamels Black Writer.  I found the paint to be very easy to write with, so I just added “Mommy’s Time Out” to the center of the clock and started adding little swirled designs on the rest of the glass.

Step 3: Paint stripes on the bottom of the glass.  I wanted this to resemble a zebra print, so I just made the lines wavy and unevenly spaced.  I also painted some of the crystal transparent paint on the stem to add a tiny bit of glitter to it.

All that’s left to do is air cure or bake it to protect the paint when in use.  The best way to do this is to place the piece on a cookie sheet and put it into a cold oven. Heat the oven to the appropriate temperature, according to package directions. Bake for 30 minutes, then turn the oven off and leave the piece inside until the oven is completely cool.  This should even make it dishwasher safe, although I always choose to wash painted pieces by hand.

I think this would be a great gift for any new mom…even if she’s like me and thinks alcohol tastes disgusting, it would be fun to fill it up with some iced coffee or another treat she enjoys!   What would you put in your glass?
