Monsters University Pencil Topper

Halloween is right around the corner, which means it’s a great time to talk about… MONSTERS!  A few weeks ago, a package showed up at our doorstep for Little Crafter that contained the Monsters University DVD/Blu Ray combo pack and he couldn’t have been more excited!  He had wanted to see the movie when it first came out this summer, but kept changing his mind because he’s afraid of the dark and didn’t want to go to the movie theater.  Once he found out he and I could watch it together all snuggled up on our couch, he was sold!

Both of us absolutely loved the movie!  It was entertaining, funny, and also even incorporated important messages, like the fact that lying and cheating might seem like a good way to win, but they’re not!  Little Crafter keeps talking about the characters and asking when we can watch it again…which will probably be very soon.  In the meantime, I decided to make him a little something based on his favorite character, Mike Wazowski!

As most of you know, LC started kindergarten this year, and among other things, we’ve been working on is a proper pencil grip and better handwriting.  Unfortunately, although he’s incredibly bright and loves school in general, those particular things are of very little interest to him.  I thought having his favorite Monsters University character as a pencil topper would encourage him to practice his letters more.

Here’s how you can make your own!

Materials:
– green, blue, and brown felt scraps
– hot glue and glue gun
– scissors
– googly eye {a big one!}
– black and white fabric paint
– green thread and sewing needle {optional}

STEP 1: Cut out your felt pieces.  You need two circles and two arm shapes from green felt.  I traced a small bucket for the circle and just freehanded the arms.  Cut two brown horns and one blue baseball cap.

STEP 2: Sew or glue circles together leaving an opening at the bottom.  I chose to hand stitch mine, but glue around the outer edges works too.  Just make sure you don’t seal it all the way or the pencil won’t go inside.

STEP 3: Glue on horns, arms, hat, and eye.

STEP 4: Use fabric paint to create mouth and M logo on hat.  I just made a black semi circle, then added some white teeth.  To make it simpler, you could just do a plain black smile.  You can make the “M” as simple as you want too.

That’s all there is to it!  One Mike Wazowski Monsters University pencil topper, ready to be used for all kinds of schoolwork!

So far so good…the little man {who insists on being Cat in the Hat whenever possible} approves.  His big smile when I showed him his little gift was priceless!  Now he wants to make some to give to his friends at school, which is a great idea, don’t you think?  Maybe we can even make some of the other monsters too!  Instead of sending in more candy for a Halloween treat, these would be a fun and appropriately monster-y substitute!

Would the little ones {or big ones} in your life love to have their own Monsters University pencil topper?  If you make some I’d absolutely love to see pictures!  Want your own copy of Monsters U?  The Blu-Ray Combo pack like we got will be available October 29!  Can’t wait?  You can preorder it online!

Happy Scaring!

Hugs & Glitter,

  1. This would be perfect for my kidlets – both are in love with Monsters Inc (though we haven’t watched Monsters University yet). I can imagine their faces if they saw these!

    Too cool!
