DIY “Howdy Y’all” Wall Art
Howdy Y’all! Sorry, I couldn’t resist. Kirsten from One Tough Mother here! In case you don’t know, I’m a Southern girl, born in South Carolina and raised in south Georgia. I speak English and “twang” fluently. {Amy can tell you, I really do say “y’all” all the time.} My home reflects my southern roots in many ways, from the mason jars that double as drink glasses to the sweet tea that fills them. I recently created a southern greeting to grace the wall in our entryway, and today I want to show you how simple it is to make your own, whether from the South or anywhere else!
First, pick up some 8″ fiberboard three-dimensional letters.
I found mine at Hobby Lobby, and scored when I found out they were half off! Gotta love that right? Ok, moving on…
Choose a few patterns of scrapbook paper to cover your fiberboard letters. To coordinate with my home decor, I chose a cute red and beige polka dot and a navy and white stripe.
Using your letters as your template, trace each letter and cut them out of the scrapbook paper. Set aside for now.
Next you need to paint the edges. I chose Cool White Americana Acrylic Paint. I only needed one coat.
Alright, while your paint is drying, you’re going to grab those paper letters you set aside and get out your Mod Podge. You will need to paint a layer of Mod Podge onto each fiberboard letter, then attach the paper. Be sure to press the paper down and smooth it out to prevent bubbles.
Coat the paper with one or two coats of Mod Podge to seal it, and allow it to dry completely.
To hang my letters, I used these adhesive picture hangers by Command. Essentially, they’re velcro strips – one side sticks to your letter and the other side sticks to the wall, then you velcro your letter onto the wall. Genius!
Use a level to hang them, and you’re done! Cute, right? I think so!
