Beach in a Basket: Using the Seashells You Found

Hey there, friends!  Most of you know that the Artsy Family just returned to the “real world” after a fabulous vacation in Myrtle Beach.  And as with any trip to a beachy destination, it’s impossible to come home without sand in your bags and a collection of seashells in your bucket.  Particularly when you have a small “helper” who loves finding treasures every day and insists on bringing them all home!

But if you’re anything like me, you get home and think, “Now, what the heck do I do with these?” Then, you bag them up, sit them in a closet or on a shelf in your ridiculously unorganized craft room and they live there for an indeterminate amount of time.  Sound familiar?  Well, I have a solution!  Put them on display in this really cheap and easy way!

All you need is:

– your shells

– a glass vase {you can use any size/shape you like and can probably get it for less than $5}.

I started by choosing my largest shells that were in good condition and placing them around the edges of the vase at the bottom.  Then, I filled in the center with broken shell pieces that Little Crafter found and insisted on keeping.  That filled in the empty space and pushed the pretty shells against the glass.  I continued to do the same thing as I worked my way up, arranging the best looking shells around the sides and putting broken ones or ones that were really similar to others on the inside.  I decreased the size of the shells as I got closer to the top.  I had set aside some of my very favorites to layer on top where everyone will notice them.

That’s all there is to it.  No glue, no fancy supplies, just your shells and a glass container.  You could stop there if you like, or you can make it a little more of a display piece by adding a few other inexpensive pieces.

I used a basket from Walmart, a scrap piece of burlap, a starfish my friend Sabine gave me, and a sand dollar my mom had.  You can purchase starfish and sand dollars at just about any of those beach stores really inexpensively!  This whole display cost me less than $10, and every time I see it, it reminds me of my favorite place!

What about you?  Do you collect and save seashells? What are your favorite things to do with them once you get home?

Hugs & Glitter,

  1. That is such a lovely display. I love collecting shells. And I have an inkling that we will bring home a lot this year as we will be spending our summer holiday by the sea.
