Polka Dot Flowerpots

Do you plant a garden this time of year?  My favorite thing to grow is fresh herbs we can use in our meals.  This year, I saw some really adorable polka dot pots in Michaels, but didn’t want to spend almost $5 a piece on them…so, Little Crafter and I decided to make our own!

Materials:
– terracotta pots
– acrylic paint
– acrylic sealer
– adhesive vinyl {I used the permanent outdoor kind}

Step 1: Paint each pot whatever color you choose.

It’s funny, we used the same brand of paint for all four pots, but the green and blue took just two good coats to cover well, while the others took about 5 or 6 coats.  Make sure you let them dry completely between coats and before moving on.  I let Little Crafter choose the colors for the pots all by himself, and I think he did a great job!  I was a little disappointed that the purple turned out so dark, but it’s all good!

Step 2: Cut vinyl circles that are approximately 1″.  Adhere to pots.

I’m sure you’ve already figured out that I used “Cammie” {my beloved Silhouette Cameo} to cut my circles, but you could always do them by hand or with a punch.  If you don’t have vinyl, you could also trace something round and paint them with white paint instead, but that’s more work.

Step 3: Apply a clear acrylic sealer over your painted pots.

This will keep them nice for a long time despite being exposed to all kinds of weather.  I applied my sealer out back and my poor neighbor got totally confused watching me because he couldn’t figure out how I was using one can and one brush and ending up with different colored pots…he didn’t realize it was a clear coat.  Silly neighbor!

Once the pots were totally dry, we were able to do our planting!  Little Crafter helped me put some Potting Soil in each one, then add our herbs and water them.

We planted four different herbs this year.  Three of them I’ve grown in the past and frequently use:  Basil {which I love in a good grown-up grilled cheese sandwich}, Rosemary {which I chop and use to season rice, orzo, and vegetables}, & Sweet Mint {which I looooove in iced tea}.  This year we also got some Cilantro to try.  We always love it in the salsa and on the foods we get at Salsaritas, so we thought it might be a tasty addition to some of our Mexican meals.

Don’t the plants just look so happy in their bright, fun pots?  I love looking out the window and seeing them!
I’m completely pleased with how they turned out, and love that I was able to achieve something so similar to what I saw in the store for less money {and more fun}!

There’s nothing like using fresh herbs from your own garden!  What are some of your favorites?
