Living the Green

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of White Cloud. All opinions are 100% mine.
With Spring in the air and Earth Day just a few weeks away, it’s the perfect time to think about how each of us can do our part to take care of our world.   When we think about going “green,” it can be intimidating…I know I, for one, hesitate to commit to anything that seems like it’s going to require huge lifestyle changes or be a big hit to the budget.   But the truth is, even the smallest things we do in our own families have a lasting impact on the environment and make the world a nicer place for our children and their children to live.

Here in the Artsy Family, we have been working on taking little but important steps to be more “green,” like turning off the lights when we leave a room, taking reuseable bags with us to the grocery store, and making sure we put our bottles, cans, and paper in the recycling bin instead of the trash.  Little Crafter likes putting things in the bin himself, and he loves watching for the big truck to come and empty it every Friday.  We also plant our own vegetable garden each spring and LC loves watching the tomatoes, peppers, and herbs grow.  There’s something really satisfying about eating something you’ve grown yourself and knowing it’s free from additives and pesticides.

And, we’ve actually found that we can participate in recycling by reusing our “trash” as craft supplies!  Here’s a fun little “green” project you can do with even the smallest crafters!

REUSABLE TOTE BAG

Materials:
– small tote bag {3/$1 at Walmart}
– fabric paints
– toilet paper or paper towel rolls
– paper bag

First, we prepare our work surface.  Sometimes at the store, instead of using our canvas bags, I get paper bags so that I have them on hand to reuse for projects like this.  I put one down under the project, and also cut a small piece to place inside the bag so the front and back don’t stick together when painted.

STEP 1: Squeeze paint onto a flat surface.

STEP 2: Dip end of the roll into the paint and stamp onto the bag in whatever pattern you like!  I cut our roll into five smaller pieces; just the right size for little hands, and it allowed us to use lots of different colors!

To make it even more interesting, you can shape the tube first so that it stamps an oval, a heart, or something else besides a circle.

STEP 3: Repeat until you’re happy with the design!  Let it dry for 24 hours before using.

Now your little crafter has his/her own resuable bag to carry snacks, toys, school supplies, or whatever else fits inside!

See?  “Living the Green” can be a lot of fun for the whole family!  It doesn’t mean breaking your budget, becoming a “tree-hugger”, or turning your life upside down!  It simply means each of us making wise choices for our families and our world.  Another “green” choice our family makes is to buy eco-friendly products when they’re affordable, like the new Green Earth line of White Cloud paper products, which are available exclusively at Walmart.  The eco-friendly paper towels and  bath tissue are made with 100% recycled fibers; you can check them out on the White Cloud GreenEarth products page or in your local Walmart.  All Green Earth products maintain a Forest Stewardship Council Certification and maintain the highest standards of quality while not breaking the bank.  You can also find more ideas for simple ways to care for the environment on the White Cloud “Living the Green” Pinterest board.

  1. Little Crafter’s bag is too cute. I should have my little Monkey do this with his foot prints on our boring old bags! We have so many, but I sometimes forget to bring them to the store with me. Thanks for the heads up about the contest. Checking it out now!

  2. Super cute LC! I talk often with my little guy about how we are to take care of the earth and one way is to never litter. It can definitely be overwhelming to think of everything but it sure helps to just take those small steps!
