Chunky Pink Friendship Bracelet

I just love getting things in the mail, don't you?!  I mean real, fun things {not bills}.  Letters, postcards, and best of all...presents!  Which is why I jumped at the chance to be a part of a friendship bracelet swap organized by Tia over at Sew Cal Mama.

I was matched up with a gal named Shannon, who told me that her favorite colors are fall colors and pink, and that she prefers chunky style jewelry.

So, I took Little Crafter to Michaels with me and we chose a strand of really fun pink beads that varied in shape, size, and shade.  All I did was string them on a piece of elastic and tie it off {tightly!}.  That's the entire tutorial...really.  It was super duper easy to make; no tools or jewelry-making skills required.  Anyone can do it!  I absolutely looooove it...so, Shannon, if it's not your thing, feel free to mail it back!

Otherwise, we're off to Michaels to buy another strand of beads...Mama needs herself a pink bracelet too!

Meanwhile, it got me to thinking, would any of you all be interested in some kind of a swap organized here at One Artsy Mama?  Maybe holiday ornaments?  Or we could do bracelets too?  Leave a comment and let me know what you think!

Happy Crafting!

Shine on Fridays #47 {and a Michaels gift card giveaway}!

Happy almost-weekend!  It's been an exciting week here at One Artsy Mama; Little Crafter and I have gotten to play with all kinds of Mod Podge and make a bunch of fun seasonal decorations.
If you missed them, I'd love for you to check out our Monster Yard Sign and Halloween Centerpiece!

And, speaking of fun projects, I have to give a shout out to these top-viewed links from last week's party:

Easy fall decor: You just need leaves, glue, and a vase!

This week's party is sponsored by Heather from A Cupcake Love Affair...here she is to introduce herself:

Hey everyone! My name is Heather and I blog over at A Cupcake Love Affair! I decided to start blogging to keep my hands busy in my craft while trying to get a business up and running. It is my outlet for creativity, sounding board for ideas, friendship-building community, and, some days, the only way I stay sane! On my blog you'll find all things cupcake, a lot about baking in general, and a little about me!

Since cupcakes are kind of hard to mail across the country, Heather has generously offered to give away a $20 Michaels gift card instead!  Man, this is one of those giveaways I sure wish I could enter.

Rafflecopter will walk you through the entry process {it may take a moment or two to load}.  Good luck, friends!

Halloween Centerpiece: Mod Podged Ornaments

So, I'm pretty sure that Little Crafter was just as excited as I was when we unpacked our box o' fun and saw all the different kinds of Mod Podge to play with!  He was particularly excited that there was one just for kids, and told me we needed to make something with it.  Well, I do have a reputation to uphold as one artsy mama, so how could I say no?

But what to make, what to make?  I looked in my stash and found a few of those empty clear plastic ornaments you can get in craft stores around Christmas time.  I also had some tissue paper on hand that happened to be good colors for the season.  So, we decided to make a Halloween centerpiece featuring decorated ornaments.  Since each ornament would be different, it would give us the opportunity to try out a number of different Mod Podge formulas.

The basic procedure for each ornament was the same.  First, we ripped up our tissue paper.

Then, we applied Kids' Mod Podge to the surface of the ornament and Little Crafter placed the pieces of tissue paper wherever he wanted them to go.  Once the entire ball was covered, we chose a type of Mod Podge to use on top and coated the whole thing to seal the tissue paper in place.

After drying, we could add embellishments like ribbon.  If you were going to make a Halloween tree or hang them from the ceiling or light fixture, you could do that too, but since ours were going to sit in a bowl, we didn't actually need hangers.

Here's a closer look at each of our six ornaments.  This one, "Mr. Punky," as LC likes to call him, is just orange tissue paper with a coating of Sparkle Mod Podge.  We cut the face shapes from black felt and stuck them on while the Mod Podge was still wet.

This one uses purple and orange tissue paper and Sparkle Mod Podge.

For this one, we were going for a candy corn effect, so we used white, yellow, and orange tissue paper.  This time, we played with the Super Gloss Mod Podge.  It definitely came out shiny!

This one is simple; just purple tissue paper and Sparkle Mod Podge...can you tell we both love glitter?

The last two use the same color combo; purple, orange, and yellow, but one we did with Sparkle Mod Podge {right} and the other is Glow in the Dark Mod Podge {on the left}!  How fun!  You really need the coat the Glow formula pretty thick to get it to glow, but it's a fun effect!  Impossible to photograph, though...sorry!  You'll just have to try it for yourself...

I think my favorite part of the whole thing was the way Little Crafter insisted on spreading the Mod Podge himself, telling me, "That's MY job, Mommy.  It is kids' Mod Podge, after all."
That's a verbatim quote.  I love that kid.

Once our ornaments were all dry, we decided to arrange them in an orange bowl I found for a great price at Target.  We filled it with dried black beans, then arranged our ornaments on top of them.

Here's how it looks if you turn Mr. Punky over...a little more subtle, but in my opinion, not quite as fun:

Either way, it's a quick and easy project, and cheap too!  All you need are the ornaments which you can get for $1 a piece or less, scrap tissue paper, and Mod Podge.  This total project cost me less than $10; not bad for a centerpiece.

So there you have it, my third project made from my box o' Mod Podge goodies!  If you missed the others, be sure to check out the Mother Necklace and the Monster X-ing sign!  Coming up next, a special piece of seasonal wall art!  Stay tuned...

Happy fall, y'all!

Monster X-ing Yard Sign

Friends, I am so excited about today's project and about the materials I got to use to make it!  If you're a regular reader, you know that I heart Mod Podge{So much so that my buddy Terry once joked that if I were stranded on a desert island, I'd Mod Podge together some sticks to make a raft and then sit on it crafting until I got rescued.}  Well, recently, I was selected as part of a Mod Podge Halloween campaign.  When I received the box of supplies from Plaid, it's a good thing I was sitting down to open it!  Look at all the goodies inside...

11{!} different kinds of Mod Podge, eight colors of paint, plus a brayer, rollers, a brush, adhesives, and Mod Podgeable shapes!  I couldn't wait to try out every single product...you know I love me some Mod Podge...

As it turns out, there's pretty much no way to use every single supply in one project, so I had to settle for making several projects instead, the rest of which I'll be sharing with you in upcoming posts.  I love how all of them turned out, but I have to say that my favorite is this DIY Monster X-ing Yard sign.  Here's how I did it, and you can too!

Materials:
Here's what I used from my box o'fun!
Folk Art Outdoor acrylic paints
Outdoor Mod Podge
Sparkle Mod Podge
Sponge Brush and Roller

I also needed:
4 wooden craft boards
a dowel
paintbrushes
fabric scraps
google eyes

I gave each of the boards three coats of paint and used the Outdoor Mod Podge as a glue to hold them together.

I totally freehanded them, and chose fabric from my stash that matched my paints.  I applied the Outdoor Mod Podge to the back of the fabric, then smoothed the shapes down, getting out any air bubbles.

This was totally my favorite part!  It was such fun deciding what each monster would look like and watching them "come to life."  I wanted them to be super silly rather than scary because Little Crafter doesn't like anything spooky {and hey, neither do I}!  I love that the paints are designed for outdoor use, just like the Mod Podge, so I don't have to worry about the little monster faces washing away or flaking off.  At this point, I also added Sparkle Mod Podge to one of the monsters, and can I just say it's my new favorite product?!  My gosh, I want to sparkle everything!!  It's super easy to use and it has just the right glitter size and ratio!  Little Crafter agrees, saying, "Glitter makes everything better."  So there you have it.

Or, if you're one of those fancy machine-owning types, I suppose you could do this with vinyl instead.  {jealous?  me?}

I just painted inside the indentations my pen made.  The letters aren't perfect, but they look better than if I'd freehanded them and you can't tell from a distance!

This was fun because I got to try out the little roller bottle and roll the Outdoor Mod Podge all over everything!  I like how it made a nice even looking surface instead of leaving brush strokes or those stray bristles I sometimes have to deal with on my projects.  It's a great tool for a project with a medium-large surface area to cover.  I added the google eyes on top while the Mod Podge was still wet.

My sign wasn't particularly thick, so I used glue and a clamp in the back instead of screws.  You may also want to add scrap wood pieces going vertically on the back of the sign on either side of the dowel to help with stability.

Step 7: Add your own monster {optional}...

I'm loving it.  It's so festive and fun; a great way to decorate for the season without being scary for LC or the other neighborhood kiddos.  What do you think?  Would the little monsters you know approve?

Be sure to stay tuned for more fun projects Little Crafter and I have made with our box o' goodies!  He's been working hard to make a one-of-a-kind centerpiece using just about every kind of Mod Podge in the box!  Speaking of which, if you're interested in learning more about the products we've been playing with, check them out on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest!

Happy Fall, Y'all!

Grow Your Blog: Guest Post Hosting

Recently in this series, we talked about some "do's" and "don'ts" for guest posting when you're the guest.  But I think it's also important to talk about the responsibilities and role of a host!

Why/when should I have guest posters?
It can be really helpful to have guests on your blog when:

*you're physically/geographically on vacation

*you need a vacation from blogging, either to spend more time with family or because of a hectic schedule

*you want to run a series

*you met a new blogging friend who you think your readers would like and you want to give her some exposure

*you find someone you'd like to do a blog swap with {you guest post for each other on the same day}.

**************************************************

How do I line up guest posters?
There are plenty of options, including e-mailing particular bloggers who you'd like to have post for you, advertising on your blog or social media that you're looking for guests, and mentioning it in groups you're involved in, like the Creative Bloggers Collective.  Sometimes, potential guests will also approach you.

**************************************************

How do I schedule guest posters?
The absolute best and easiest way I've found is to create a spreadsheet in Google Documents.  Just open Google Documents, choose Create, then Spreadsheet.
Label fields for name, email address, blog name, blog URL, and include all of the dates you want covered.  Title it and go to the blue box in the upper right corner to specify that it is accessible to anyone with the link, and can be edited by anyone with the link. Then, share the link with your guests and they can go sign themselves up for a date.

This is much easier than trying to coordinate a million emails and schedule everyone on a date they like!!  Pictured above is the sign-up sheet I used for the New Kids on the Blog Series.  I like to go back in and highlight on the chart when I've received each post, so it helps me stay organized!

************************************************

What guidelines do I give guest posters?
It depends on whether it's an individual post or part of a series.  If you are just lining up one particular post, all you need to do is tell the guest what date her post will go live and what date you need her to submit the HTML to you.  If it's a series, you need to provide any guidelines for the project {ie: it has to be a fall project, a holiday tradition, an ornament, etc}.  It's also good to create a button for the series and send all of your guests the HTML for it so that they can display it on their posts and blogs.
In either case, you are always responsible for telling guest posters the deadline for when you need their posts!  If someone is late submitting their post to you, it's up to your discretion whether to publish it or not.

************************************************

How do I choose/turn down guest posters?
Before they submit:
Sometimes you may be approached by someone who wants to post on your blog, but for whatever reason it isn't a good fit.  The larger your blog grows, the more this will happen.  I get multiple emails each week from folks who work for various companies {many are connected to some type of nanny or au pair site} or are freelance writers wanting to post content on One Artsy Mama.  When you get a proposal like this, always ask yourself, "Is this content something my readers would really be interested in?" As well as, "Is this going to be the same level of quality I like to maintain on my blog?" If the answer to either question is no, it's time to turn them down.  You can simply be polite and thank them for their interest, but say that at this time you are not accepting guest posts.  Or, you can go as far as to say that you don't think it's a good fit for your readership.

After they submit:
If you've agreed to have someone post for you and they send you a post you find unacceptable, you can contact them and ask them to make whatever changes you find necessary, whether it's that you need more content, more photos, better grammar...whatever the problem is, address it and ask them to make the changes.  If they don't or can't, you can decline to post it.  What you post on your blog is your discretion.  Unless you're part of a paid sponsorship campaign, there is no legal binding agreement, so you can decline the guest post at any time.

*****************************************************

What are my responsibilities as a host?
Your job is to:
* schedule the post to go live on the agreed date.  Look it over and make sure that it doesn't have any obvious errors or omissions.

*promote the post on your Facebook, Twitter, G+.

* provide the guest with the permalink for the post so she can promote it herself.  If you use Blogger, you can now get this ahead of time by clicking "Permalink" on the sidebar when you're scheduling the post.  You can customize it and/or copy it and paste it into an email for your guest.

One final thing: It is NOT your job to remind guest posters when their posts are due!  This is a huge pet peeve of mine, can you tell?  We're all adults, capable of managing schedules for ourselves and our familes; our blogs should be no exception.  If someone agrees to a post and chooses/is given a date and a deadline, it is no longer your job to provide reminders.  If you want to, of course you can send out a friendly, "hey, don't forget you're scheduled to post for me on x-date" but if they forget, it's not your responsibility; they are the one with the missed opportunity.  I don't mean to be harsh, but I get frustrated when bloggers make a commitment then blow it off because it leaves the host in a bind; we depend on them to provide content for that day!

Ok, deep breath. :)  I'm better now.  I hope something there is helpful to you!  If you have more questions or your own tips for hosting guest posters, feel free to share!

Mod Podge "Mother" Necklace

Hey, friends!  I can't wait to show you my latest jewelry project!  If you follow along on Facebook, you probably saw a photo this week of the huge box o' fun I got...full of all kinds of Mod Podge, paint, and applicators.  On Wednesday, I get to show you the main project I made with the supplies, but I've tested them out on a few other things too, like this "Mother" necklace.

One of the items in my goody box was something called "Podgeable Shapes," a collection of 18 ovals, circles, squares, and rectangles {some with holes, some without} just waiting to be Mod Podged!

I couldn't resist playing with them, so I glanced around my craft room for something to make a necklace out of.  I recently got orders for four of my Dictionary pendants, three of which used the word "mother".  I had an extra print-out of the definition, and much to my delight, it fit perfectly with the podgeable square!  I trimmed it to the right size, put some glossy Mod Podge on the back of the square, then stuck the definition to it.  Then, I coated the back with two coats of Mod Podge to seal the deal.

Once it was dry, I added a jump ring, as well as a little heart charm and a tiny crystal to represent LC's birthstone {of course it has to be my least favorite one, that August peridot}.  The ones without holes could be done in the same way, just adding a bail to them instead of a jump ring.  I love the way this turned out!

{you know, sometimes I wonder what kind of conversations my neighbors have...if they ever say things like, "Honey, I'm not so sure about that girl next door.  Now she's making her tree wear a necklace and taking its picture...do you think we should move?"}

Anyway, you could do it with any definition, as well as sheet music, or any photo or printed image you want!  For more ideas, go see Kate at Cheap Crafty Mama; she made these really cute reversible bird pendants with the Podgeable shapes.  And she happens to be giving some away over on her blog too...

I'm looking forward to playing around with some of the other shapes and seeing what I can create!  Stay tuned for LOTS more Mod Podge this week...my main project as well as a secondary project and a project made by Little Crafter himself!  'Til then,

Happy Crafting!
