PacMan Reverse Applique Shirt

So, a few weeks ago, I was in Target and I saw this shirt.
Pac Man Nom Nom Men's Graphic Tee - Sea Heather
There was no question that I needed to buy it for the hubs.
{Does that totally give us away as children of the 80's?}

Meanwhile, of course LC was with me, and he got a little jealous.  He actually knows who PacMan is, thanks to the iPod touch, and enjoys trying to play the game and "eat the monsters," as he calls them.  So, that meant an endless search for a child's PacMan t-shirt...which is impossible to find in stores, and costs at least $18 online.  No thanks.

I thought to myself, "Hey, you're supposed to be an artsy mama, right?  And PacMan, well, he's  just a circle with 1/8 cut out.  There has to be a way to make this sucker for cheap."

...so here it is in all its 97 cent glory!
I guess to be fair I should include the cost of the black shirt, but I think my mom actually picked that up for him sometime last summer thinking we could craft with it somehow, so I don't even know what it cost.  All I bought was a 97 cent fat quarter of yellow fabric at WalMart.

To make your own PacMan masterpiece, all you need is:
- a tshirt
- yellow fabric
- black thread
- scissors
- sewing machine, pins

I did a simple reverse applique; a full tutorial with pics can be found here; that's the one I used.
Basically, I just traced one of LC's bowls onto a piece of paper to get a perfect circle, then folded it so it was divided in eighths.  I cute out one section, and POW, you get PacMan.  I cut a blob {yes, that's a technical term} of yellow fabric that was slightly larger than my PacMan pattern, turned the t-shirt inside out, and pinned the fabric where I wanted the design to be.  I also pinned the pattern on.  Then, I sewed around the pattern, trimmed the excess fabric, turned the shirt right side out, and cut out the shirt that was covering the yellow fabric.  Again, if that doesn't make sense, go here!

Is it perfect?  Um, nope.  I learned {the hard way} to be extra careful that your fabric doesn't pucker while you're sewing.  It's not super noticeable though, and a certain someone doesn't seem to mind.
That's what I did with fabric this week...what about you?
Remember, fabric is this week's challenge material!  If you make something, send me a pic or a link and I'll feature it on the Facebook page to help inspire our contestants!

Pass It On

Last month, I got a sweet email from one of my newer bloggy buddies, Hilani from over at Handmade by Hilani.  She told me that she was participating in something called the "Pass it On" Project and asked if I would be willing to play along.  Here's how it works.

The person who contacted you {in my case, Hilani}, sends you two handmade items.  One is for you to keep, the other is to give away to a friend

Then, you choose two crafty buddies you admire and send each of them two handmade items, which they in turn will keep and give away.

Finally, you blog about it and have a little show and tell about what you got and what you gave.  So...here goes!

Hilani chose to send me two of her fun fabric bracelets.  I kept the one you see me wearing in the photo {and at least once a week}, and gave the other one to my mom, who loves it!  And, because she's extra sweet, Hilani also threw a coffee cozy in for me.  Or maybe it's because she knows I'm a hopeless Starbucks addict.  Either way, I loooove it!  I think the fabric is adorable and I love how it velcros so that it fits any size drink I feel like ordering.  Thank you soooooo much, friend!

For my turn, I chose to send some goodies to my friends Lindsay from Southern Lovely
and
Steph from Silver Boxes.

For Lindsay, I made two Scrabble tile pendants; one with cherries and the other with a cute brown and pink pattern.

Steph told me she's more of a bracelet kind of gal, so I used Hilani's fabulous tutorial to try and make her some fabric bracelets much like the fun ones I received.

I had fun making the projects; hope you enjoy them, Lindsay and Steph!  Now it's your turn to pass it on!

Happy Crafting!

**************************************************************
ENTRY A: Bookshelf Fire Station and Firemen

This is the perfect doll house for a boy! Using a small bookshelf from Target (they call it a mini cube organizer), some scrapbook paper, and matte Mod Podge, I converted it into a fire station! The bookshelf didn't have a back to it, so I mod podged multiple pieces of foam core with scrapbook paper and added wall decorations to create 4 different rooms: a bathroom, bedroom, garage and kitchen. There is a fire pole connecting the second floor to first floor and 3 peg dolls that became fireman with a little paper and a lot of Mod Podge!

ENTRY B: Fabric & Mod Podge Shoe Redo

When Amy revealed the main ingredient for this challenge I knew right away I wanted to make over a pair of shoes! It's something I've never done before and I thought this was the perfect opportunity to branch out of my comfort zone and try something new. I've had this pair of Steve Madden wedges for close to seven years and even though I haven't worn them for the last three, I haven't been able to part with them because they are seriously one of the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. Which makes them the perfect candidate for this makeover. I found the gray linen fabric in my craft supply and paired it with a contrasting floral print (Tempo Mambo to be exact). I used Fabric Mod Podge to adhere the fabric to the shoes, then adorned them with a fabric flower and thumb tack studs to give them a little an edgy look. The makeover was a success and I can't wait to wear my favorite shoes again!

ENTRY C: "Timeless Memories" Clock

It could be the location of your first date, your wedding, your honeymoon or where your child was born, let those memories remain 'timeless' forever.  Grab a map and a clock.  Replace the clock front with your map and seal it with Mod Podge.  Take it a step further and add a bead {yes, I am referencing beads again, does that get me extra credit} or a pin to the exact location you want to remain timeless.  Put your clock back together and enjoy. No matter how much time has passed, cherish all your memories.

ENTRY D: Photo Coat Rack
Round two, Mod Podge!! I am so excited for this round because I love Mod Podge! For this project, I turned a board {that I found on the side of the road} and $1 frames from Michaels into a personalized coat rack for each of my kiddos. I used Mod Podge to decorate the frames with scrapbook paper and added trim for an extra touch. My favorite part about this project {aside from that pretty Mod Podged paper} is that the frames are all attached using industrial strength Velcro so that I can easily change out the pictures! So fun, right?? I can't wait to show you how easy it is to make one of these on your own!

ENTRY E: Mod Podge Dresser Redo

This week for my mod podge project I upcycled an antique dresser vanity. This is a vanity my sister-in-law has had sitting at her house for a while now. She has been wanting to redo it but is about to have a baby any day so I asked her if I could do it for her.  I gave it a fresh coat of paint, roughed it up a bit and then mod podged blue script scrapbook paper onto the dresser drawers and top of the dresser. It turned out so cute and I am sad I have to give it back now!  I can't wait to show you how I did it and post before and after pictures! The decor on the dresser is also from garage sales!

ENTRY F: Glass Tile Mosaic

There are so many possibilities that you can do with Mod Podge, but one of my all-time favorite projects is working with glass tiles.  As many ideas as I had, I wanted to make a project that was really "me", and I kept coming back to my tiles.  But with as small as glass tiles are... I knew I needed to go bigger for this challenge.
88 times bigger, to be precise. :)
I created this glass tile mosaic piece one tile at a time, and I can't be any more thrilled about how it looks hanging over my computer as I write this.  To make it, I decided on a photo I liked, and I printed it off in 4 different color tones (light and dark, in both blue and sepia), then trimmed them all up together into identical squares.  As I worked, I used squares from each of the different colors to get the two-tone effect.  I used regular Mod Podge to adhere the paper squares to each tile.  Once they dried, I added a coat of dimensional magic to make them shiny and give them depth.  When they were dry again, I measured and glued each square onto a 11x14 wooden canvas that I had painted black, and put it in a frame.  The end result is a project that satisfies both my right-brain and left-brain tendencies - a creative endeavor of the bigger picture, made up from measured, mathematical steps - perfect to hang in my office area to inspire me, whether I'm sitting down to work or be creative!

ENTRY G: Family Circle Kitchen Table
Like most families, we use our kitchen table all of the time. I thought it would be fun to personalize the tabletop...something that, when we saw it, would make us smile. My little family and I had a picture taken of us holding hands in the grass. After editing it on our computer, I saved the picture to a flash drive and took it to a copy store. They printed the picture the same size as my table, which cost me about $7. At home I used a roller brush to roll on Mod Podge to the entire tabletop. I carefully added the family picture and let it dry. Three more coats of Mod Podge were painted across the surface of the table to seal the picture and keep the top wipe able and spill proof. I love how personal and family friendly this project turned out!

ENTRY H: Polkadot Snail Art
My daughter LOVES snails. She gets excited about each one she finds and calls them her best friends! I wanted to make something that would capture that memory and also be something we would want to display even when she gets past this current obsession. The polkadots swirled around look whimsical and modern to me and the color makes me happy! My little girl can't wait to hang her polkadot snail in her room!

ENTRY I: Dyed Mason Jars
When I found out that this week's mystery material was Mod Podge, I'm not going to lie, I was a little nervous.  I've never really had much luck using it (weird, right?).  So I did some research and found out that by using Mod Podge and food coloring you can actually dye glass!  The process was super easy.  For each jar I used about two tablespoons of Mod Podge and a few drops of food coloring.  After swirling the Mod Podge mixture inside each jar (completely coating it), and baking them at 250 for about 45 minutes, I had three beautifully colored mason jars.  They're a perfect way to brighten any room for the summer!

ENTRY J: Tissue Paper Trash Can

This plain boring white trash can that I keep near my desk has been stifling my creative juices.  Something had to be done!  After attacking it with some tissue paper and Mod Podge, I feel much more ready to take on the world!  Or at least One Artsy Contest. :)

ENTRY K: Graffiti Wall Art

I wanted a new piece of art for my son's room so with a bottle of mod podge, wood and a poster I got a little creative.  I staggered the wood to give the piece a unique look to it, and the mod podge was super easy to use to adhere the art to the wood.  Now it's the perfect piece above my son's bed that is a focal point in his room.

ENTRY L: Photo Canvas

When I found out that we had to use Mod Podge this week, I was very excited because I have wanted to make photo canvases for about 6 months now.  I love the way this one turned out.  I actually made two and will share the other one with you on my blog tomorrow, along with the full tutorial.  Since the material was Mod Podge, the photo was adhered to the canvas with Mod Podge.  This project is very simple and dries super fast.  Have you ever ordered your pictures on canvas?  They are expensive!  This photo canvas costs less than 10 bucks!

ENTRY M: Paisley & Polkadot End Table Refashion

Modge Podge is to crafting as butter isto cooking – it just makes everything better!  This little tablewas a pretty beat up freebie and I couldn't wait to transform herinto something beautiful again.  I got lost in rows of fabricchoices, but have always had an attraction to paisley and polka dotsso the choice was obvious.  A  coat of paint, little bit of ModgePodge, a little bit of fabric and a pair of cuticle scissors madethis makeover a breeze.  I just LOVE how she turned out – fromfrumpy to fabulous!!  Check out the blog post after the contestresults for the Amazing Before and After – happy voting!
ENTRY N: Floral Owl Clock
For challenge number two, I wanted to create a piece that was going to be both decorative and functional. My daughter loves owls and they also happen to be her grade school mascot.  So, when I came across a wooden owl cut out, I knew it would work perfect for this project.  To tie in to the colors of her bedroom, I pulled some coordinating decorative papers with the floral print and the blue design to mod podge to the surface of the owl. Button eyes were added to give it some sparkle & depth and a fun trim was used to finish the sides.  This is a one of a kind clock that was a real "hoot" to make.

ENTRY O: DIY Chalkboard

It was my first time getting to really use Mod Podge for a craft purpose rather than using it for glue.  It was so much fun.  I came across a frame online that had a floral pattern to it and I knew I wanted to make something just like it.  I decided on a chalkboard for my office last minute.  I just went and bought a cheap plastic frame that was poster board size and removed everything besides the frame and took my fabric that I found at JoAnn's and cut it into strips and Mod Podge it to the plastic frame.  And then took the frame backing and painted some chalkboard paint over it then sanded it.  It turned out better than I had expected and I have another way of using this technique for another Anthropologie Knock off!  What can I say? I love Mod Podge!
