Fun Painted Flowerpots

 A great big THANK YOU is in order today!
Thank you to Jessi from Practically Functional for inspiring me with her fabulous Painted Terra Cotta Flowerpot tutorial!
As soon as I saw it, I knew I needed to reproduce her idea for my herb pots this year!  I bought a few pots at Michaels, painted them up, and here they are:

What's that?  You love them too?  Well, they're super-easy to make, especially since Jessi has a link for the cute little label template on her tutorial.  I printed it, cut, traced, and voila!

Here's what you need to make your own:
- terra cotta pots
- acrylic paints, including black & white
- assorted paintbrushes {mine were provided by Craftprojectideas.com}
- Minwax Polycrilic Sealer

All you do is paint the base color {mine took two coats}, then trace the label shape on and paint it black.  Outline with an accent color, then paint on whatever you want!  Of course you could use chalkboard paint and write on them with real chalk, but since my pots are going to be living outside, I figured it would just wash away every time it rains.  So, I created the illusion of a chalkboard instead, then sealed the whole pot with polycrilic sealer to make everything glossy and waterproof.

While I was painting the words, I got to test out the new triangle handle paintbrushes Craftprojectideas.com sent us, and let me tell ya, they're pretty awesome!  Comfy to hold, and they don't roll away!  Plus, that smallest one was just the right size for lettering.

Once the pots were ready, it was plantin' time!  Little Crafter and I took a field trip to the local garden center where we picked up some potting soil and four herb plants.

Mr. Tough Guy carried the dirt all the way to the car and then all the way through the house for me.  He filled each pot with soil, watered it, and helped me fill in more soil after I'd planted the herb.

Best. Helper. Ever.

Here they are in all their planted loveliness!  I love having fresh rosemary to put in with grilled or sauteed vegetables, and there's nothing like home-grown mint to put in your iced tea on a hot day!  And the basil, of course, is for my favorite grown-up grilled cheese sandwiches!

Little Crafter got to pick the fourth herb.  He chose lavender.  We had to plant that one after his nap because I hadn't been sure what he would choose, so I waited to paint on it after I knew what we were planting.

What do you think?  I'm loving them!
Do you plant herbs too?  Which ones do you use?

Happy planting!
