Handmade Holidays: Leslie’s Card Banner

Hi, I am Leslie and I blog over at Violet Imperfection.

I’m a wife, a stay at home Mama, crafter, reader, lover of all things Disney and a reforming perfectionist. My blog is about teaching my daughter Violet that not everything has to be perfect through crafts, cooking and everyday life.
Amy was kind enough to let me be a part of the Handmade Holidays (on the cheap) series. I am so excited to be sharing how I made a card banner for all the lovely holiday cards we receive. Receiving, sending and most importantly displaying holiday cards is one of my very favorite things about this time of year.
I came up with this idea after seeing something similar at Target, being a stay at home mom means I don’t always have extra money to spend on things that are wants, so I decided to make one.

Supplies:
  • Jute twine
  • Scrapbook paper
  • Mod Podge
  • Foam paint brush
  • Card stock or thin cardboard
  • Clothespins
  • Sandpaper
  • Ribbon
The first thing I did was make my clothespins banner ready. Trace your clothespins on the back of your selected scrapbook paper and cut them out. They don’t have to be perfect and can overlap the clothespin.
Next you want to put a thin layer of Mod Podge on your clothespin and attach a piece of your cut out scrapbook paper. I found the best way was to lay the paper down and press the clothespin down on top as pictured below. I needed 15 clothespins for my banner but you may want to make more or less depending on the length of your banner.
After your clothespins dry, it is time to sand them and give them the rustic look I was going after. I wanted the metal clip to show through and then I just roughed them up a bit. You can do it as much or as little as you want.
Set aside your clothespins when you are finished with them.
I wanted a word on my card banner and the sky is the limit….merry, joy, silent night, whatever you want to use. I went with jolly to match my jolly Santa Claus scrapbook paper.
For my word, I found a free font I wanted online and printed out JOLLY so I could use it as a stencil.
Originally I was going to buy the letters but they just weren’t in the budget so my husband snagged me some thin cardboard at his work and I used that.
I glued my scrapbook paper to the cardboard before I cut out the letters and it worked like a charm.
After the paper dried I cut out the letters. I tried to position my letters over the paper so I could get most of the Santa faces.
Now it is time to put it all together, which is always the most exciting part of crafting for me. I tied bows out of red polka dot ribbon for the ends and you will have to use your imagination with me as the blank white cards are all I had to show how I will use it for my holiday cards. I figure if I get a lot of cards I can tape them together and have them go down as well as across on the clothespins.
I am so pleased with how it turned out and I hope that you have enjoyed this Homemade Holiday craft. A big thanks to Amy for sharing her piece of the Internet with me today and all of her lovely readers. I hope to see you over at my blog Violet Imperfection.
