Paint Chip Wall Art

I can’t even express to you how much I love doing artsy things with my Little Crafter.  He and I are so much alike as far as our love for all things creative.  Would you believe that he’s addicted to Pinterest?  It’s true.  He comes up to me every day and says, “Mommy, can we pin?”  Then, he sits on my lap and we browse Pinterest together.  He’ll point at things that catch his fancy and then he or I will click the button to pin them to his very own board, which he then insists on seeing.  That’s my boy.  {If you don’t already follow him, you should!  He’s got great taste!}
Anyway, yesterday morning, he pinned a Modern Wall Art with Paint Chips from A Beautiful Mess.
I was just as excited about it as he was, and made a mental note that we should do it soon.  Then, the day got away from us and it was 7:30 at night.  Hubs wanted to mow the lawn, so LC and I were left to our own devices.  Which means, we ended up at Walmart in the paint aisle collecting supplies and LC stayed up an hour past his bedtime because we got so into the project.  Yes, it’s fun living in the Artsy House.
Here’s his project…which, by the way, is perfect for little hands as well as big ones…you can easily make a grownup version like our original inspiration.
COLORFUL PAINT CHIP ART
Materials:
– blank canvas {ours was 8×10}
– lots and lots of paint chip samples
– square punch
– double sided tape or adhesive
*you can also use posterboard and a frame instead of the canvas, but we already had the canvas on hand, which made this project entirely FREE!!!
STEP 1: Choose your paint chips. You should have seen us shoving them all into my purse {my fun little clutch from Sunny Vanilla}!  Thanks, Walmart, for supplying us with hours of fun.
STEP 2: Use your square punch to create squares…I got six out of each swatch.
STEP 3: Use double sided adhesive to stick the squares to the canvas.  I let Little Crafter do this part totally on his own; he chose what colors went where and stuck them on.  I only had to re-adjust a handful of them to straighten them out a bit {the adhesive makes them easy to reposition}.
As it turned out, apparently our canvas was slightly larger than 8×10 because the 1″ squares weren’t a perfect fit.  I gave him the option of having a white border around them or having smaller ones on the edges, and he opted for covering the whole surface.  So, we trimmed some of the squares to fit as a border.

 STEP 4: Show off your masterpiece!  Seriously, have you ever seen a cuter kiddo in your whole life?  Look how proud he is!  As he was working, I was encouraging him, telling him what a good job he was doing.  At one point, he looked up at me and said, “Mommy, I really AM fabulous!”  That’s what it’s all about, right?

The finished project is hanging…where else…in Little Crafter’s room.  One of the first things he said when he woke up this morning was, “Oh, I really love my paint chip art!”  I love this kid.

Now, I’m thinking of having a go at it myself with some of our leftovers! {We had plenty}!
I mean, it’s simple and it’s free!  That’s my kind of project.
Happy Crafting!

  1. Great project! It wouldn’t have occurred to me to use double-stick tape, but I bet it made life a lot easier! I think I’ve got some lying around – maybe I’ll make paint-chip “stickers” for my two-year-old.

  2. Visiting from Delicate Construction… so cute! I have two plain white boards that are just begging to be decorated. I love that this project doesn’t involve glue (my youngest isn’t quite ready for it), but with a package of glue dots or double sided tape, we’re good to go!
