Silly Turkeys
It’s almost Turkey Day!
A time to think about all of our blessings and be thankful to the One who provides them.
I don’t know about you, but it’s been driving me crazy how everywhere I go, they’re already playing Christmas music and everything is completely decorated with trees, garland, and lights. I’m not ready. Yes, I’ve been making and buying gifts, but no, I’m not ready to see Santa in the mall. Not until the Macy’s parade is over and there’s turkey in my tummy!
On behalf of Thanksgiving-lovers everywhere, let’s
Thanksgiving has always been one of my favorite holidays. I love the fact that it’s not commercialized, and I enjoy spending the day with my loved ones and thinking about all the things I have to be grateful for. Last year, I was so excited to host Thanksgiving for our combined families for the first time ever.
Mind you, I don’t cook turkey! I didn’t actually make anything, believe it or not!
We had the big traditional meal at my parents’ house around noon, then my parents, grandmother, in-laws, and brother-in-law came over for a dinner of ham sandwiches, potato salad, and other yummies made by hubby’s mom. I had so much fun, though, preparing the house and the table.
Little Crafter and I made these handprint turkey placecards {if you missed the tutorial when I guest posted at Mess For Less, hop on over there and see it}.
This year, I wanted to make something to put at everyone’s place again, but we needed a new idea. As I was visiting a link party recently, I saw this idea for Snowmen and Santas made from craft spoons {you know, the kind you get with those little ice cream cups!} Which got me thinking,
why not make TURKEYS?!
We had a bunch of spoons left from making Uncle Sam pins this summer, and I thought this would be a great way to use them. So, here are our funny spoon turkeys!
Turkey Placecards
{and/or magnets or pins}
Aren’t they silly and fun?
YOU’LL NEED:
-wooden craft spons
– brown acrylic paint and paintbrush
– googly eyes
– orange craft foam
– feathers
– craft glue and scissors
For placecards:
– scallop circle punch, cardstock, and marker
For pins/magnets:
– pin backs or magetic tape/circles {our magnets were generously provided by Craftprojectideas.com!}
STEP 1: Paint one side of each craft spoon and let dry.
STEP 2: Cut beak shapes from orange craft foam. Adhere eyes and beaks with craft glue.
STEP 3: Glue an assortment of feathers to the back of each spoon. We found that four fit pretty well. Little Crafter had fun picking the color and order of the feathers for each one.
Let the glue dry a little and admire your gaggle of turkeys…
STEP 4: Glue a second craft spoon to the back of the turkey to provide a flat, non feathery surface for the pin back or magnet. Then, attach whichever you choose.
Ta-da! Meet our silly gobblers!
If you’re giving them the job of placecards, here’s the final step:
Punch out scalloped circles {or whatever you have} from cardstock and write each guest’s name on one of them. I didn’t want them permanently adhered, so they’re just sitting nicely on top of each turkey.
I think they’ll be the most adorable finishing touch for our table, don’t you?!

I don’t think you’ll like me…I am sooo into Christmas sort of being a part of Thanksgiving…granted, I really only mean instrumental Christmas music…so I guess I am not too bad. But this year with out little almost two year old I am having to control the urge to decorate today! Lol
REAL turkeys are sooo hideous! They only look good cooked. But your turkey placemats are ADORABLE!
