{Our} Home for the Holidays: Rachel's Apple Turkeys

Hi! This is Rachel from I Heart Crafty Things and I'm sooooo excited to be here on One Artsy Mama!
I am a Wife and Mommy to three who LOVES doing arts and crafts with my kids. I might possibly have a small obsession with using googly eyes (ok, HUGE obsession!) and I'm pretty sure my level of animation when reading stories to my children is a little over the top, but hey, I like to keep it fun around my house!
Thinking back on my childhood, one of my favorite traditions was my Mom making Apple Turkey's with me and my siblings during the Thanksgiving season. Now that I have my own children it is something I will continue with them every year.
These are so simple to make and are perfect for using as a decoration or centerpiece for Thanksgiving Dinner!
To make them we poked 3 spice drops onto each toothpick to make feathers and then stuck it into the turkey along it's back. If your apple starts to teeter one way, you have to counter balance it with more feathers on the other side. We used a large marshmallow for the head, stuck on with 2 toothpicks. My marshmallows were a caramel swirl kind so they have some brown in them but obviously the regular ones are just fine. For the eyes we used raisins, for the beak we used a candy corn and the waddle is a fruit snack cut in half. I used a whole fruit snack on mine and thought it was too big so we cut the others in half. The face accessories we attached with half of a toothpick.
My boys decided we should add legs. Not only did I think it was a fabulous idea but it really gave the turkey's some character. I got such a kick out of Andy's legs. They look so silly from the side view!
Our turkey's are already best of friends too. There has been endless amounts of turkey chatter going on ever since they were created! heehee
I'm telling you, apple turkey's are the way to go if you want some giggly, smiling FUN!
Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and wonderful Christmas!!

Thank you SO much, Rachel, for sharing this adorable idea today! What do you think, friends?  Isn't she awesome!  I have to tell you, I get the fun benefit of seeing these posts ahead of time so that I can schedule them and make sure they're up and running, so Little Crafter and I actually made our own turkeys the day after Rachel sent me this!  We were babysitting a 4 year old friend of his, and all three of us had fun creating our little turkey-lurkeys...here are our versions!
This project definitely gets the Little Crafter seal of approval and an A+ from this Artsy Mama!
We're going to make a few more later this week for our Turkey Day table, but I have to say, these original ones have lasted for two whole weeks and aren't much worse for the wear.  Little Crafter's lost two of its feathers, but mine is still hanging tough {probably since unlike a certain someone, I haven't been touching mine every single time I walk by it}.

I hope you're enjoying the {Our} Home for the Holidays series as much as I am so far!  Be sure to check out our ongoing party as well as the weekly Shine On Fridays party for some more seasonal inspiration.  And you're definitely going to want to come back tomorrow for Kim's post about a very special gift idea.  You don't want to miss this one!

Happy Crafting!
