Dress-Up: Little Dude Style

One of my favorite things to do when I was a little girl was play dress-up
I used to love putting on fun dresses, hats, tiaras, or costumes, {and of course Mom’s shoes} and pretending to be all kinds of things.
In fact, I don’t think I ever really outgrew it…I still get excited about wearing costumes {like last year when I went full-out 80′s} and I’m thrilled that Little Crafter has decided I’m supposed to be the princess to his dragon this year.
But I never really thought about the fact that Little Crafter himself might enjoy the same thing.  Somehow I had it in my head that because he’s a little man, he wouldn’t be interested in dress-up.  Well, ever since we bought his dragon costume last week, he’s asked to wear it several times a day every day.  Which made me think about how he likes to try on our shoes and wear our hats and put on silly glasses when I’m getting ready in the morning sometimes.  Yes, little boys enjoy dress-up too.  Because it’s not about dresses, it’s about imagination.  It’s about pretending and role playing and being creative and making-believe you’re something or someone else.  Like when he put on this outfit at the hands-on museum exhibit we visited on vacation this summer:
Last week, when we visited the M family for our almost-weekly craft playdate, I noticed that they had a special area in their playroom devoted to dress-up clothes…which the kids {and I} took full advantage of.
Yeah, you know you want to play too…
Anyway, we decided to take a corner of our playroom downstairs and do something similar.
First, Little Crafter painted a special shelf and we hung it on the wall.  It cost less than 5 bucks at Michaels…pretty awesome.
Then, we scavenged all three of our closets, plus the various toy bins around the house to come up with a stash of fun clothes and accessories to start with.  We found:

a Ravens jersey, a vest, a fedora, a green wig, a visor, two neckties, bunny ears, a Mardi Gras mask, a lei, two pairs of sunglasses, and two necklaces, plus a crown, a fire chief hat, a green suit jacket, and a cape that didn’t make it into the picture.  One great side benefit of this project that I hadn’t thought about is the fact that it gives a “home” to some things that were just floating around taking up space in other parts of the house.  I’m sure we’ll collect plenty of other things before long, but this is a good start!  Now I just need to get a little box or bin for the sunglasses and other things that won’t hang up like shoes.
I think somebody likes it…
Oh, and before I sign off, I have to show you one of my personal favorite costumes ever…
What about you?  Do you like to play dress-up?

Ha, I’m not one for dressing up but that last shot of you and hubby may just have me changing my mind. Love it! We have a small bag filled with stuff like that for when our nieces and nephews come over and it’s always a big hit. Cracks me up.

We bought Halloween costumes last week too, and my 4 yr old has wanted to wear his every day since then. He is a dragon too (is yours the Old Navy one? Love their costumes!). Can’t wait to see your little dragon with his princess this year! :)

My twin boys are 8, and they still like to put on costumes. I keep their Halloween costumes from each year, and they change into them all the time.

I can’t wait till my daughter is old enough to dress up. That is some of the most fun my sisters and I had growing up. Thanks for the ideas!
