'Tis the Season?

So, ever since I saw a really cute Gerber daisy ball at my mother-in-law's house on the 4th of July, I've been obsessed with making a topiary.  What I actually wanted was one just like hers, since Gerber daisies are my absolute favorite flower.  But when I went to Michaels, it was slim pickings in the daisy section.  Back to square one.  I found this on Pinterest.
{ps - follow me there, you know you want to!}
I decided that roses or other types of flowers could be really pretty too...so, back to Michaels I went.  Wouldn't you know it, they have fall flowers out.  All of the summer things are practically gone, and the stragglers aren't too pretty.  Could I do it?  Could I buy fall flowers in July?  Part of me rebelled at the very thought. {The same part of me that loudly exclaims, "Isn't it too early for Christmas decorations" when I see them in August or cringes when I see sweaters in Target when I'm on my summer vacation}.  But alas, the desire to craft overcame my seasonal reluctance, and I came home with three stems of fall flowers...it didn't hurt that they were 40% off.
Here's what you need to make your own flower topiary...good luck finding anything summery!

CHEAP & EASY FLOWER TOPIARY

Materials:
silk flowers {about 25, which for me was 3 stems}
6" styrofoam ball
hot glue and glue gun
some type of base to display it on/in

 STEP 1: Pop the heads off your flowers. :)  Then I separated mine by color.

 STEP 2: Hot glue flowers all around your styrofoam ball except for the part that will go down in your base.  I found it helpful to poke a hole with the bit of stem left on each flower first, then put glue in the hole.
 STEP 3: Place in base.
That's all there is to it!  Cheap, quick, and easy!  It cost me around $15 and it's going to be a great centerpiece once it's actually the right season...

Meanwhile, I think I found a new love.  Have you tried Mod Podge Dimensional Magic yet?  I'm in the middle of a project that's drying as I blog...here's a little preview:
...but more on that later.  Full tutorial to come!
 Tomorrow, though, I'm going to be guest posting at Jessa Jill with a tutorial on some simple earrings that you can make, even if you've never made a single piece of jewelry before!  Hope you'll stop by!

  1. I can't believe you couldn't find summer flowers. That's criminal. Turned out nice anyway though. I guess you'll just have to put it away for a few months. Too funny.
