Colossal Cupcake Fail

Tomorrow, we’re having a big family cookout to celebrate the 4th of July.  Besides bringing the Uncle Sam pins we made earlier in the week, Little Crafter and I were assigned the task of making “a fun patriotic dessert.”  I asked him what he wanted to bring, and he said “tuhk-takes,” aka cupcakes.
I searched around online and found a fun idea for making some patriotic ones: you use a basic cake mix {we picked funfetti because it’s a certain someone’s favorite} and mix it according to the package directions.  Then, you split the batter into three bowls and use food coloring to color one bowl red and one bowl blue.
Then, you spoon the batter into the cupcake pans, alternating colors.

We decided to bake them tonight, even though it was past Noah’s bedtime when we started, and then decorate them with frosting and patriotic sprinkles in the morning.  It was all going quite nicely according to plan…that is, until it was time for them to come out of the oven.  The timer beeped, I got my potholder, and then it happened.  A freak set of circumstances I can’t even identify caused the cupcake pan to have a mind of its own and jump out of my hand.  The pan literally flipped upside down and cupcakes went flying into the oven on a random, inexplicable suicide mission.  Some dove onto the racks, others took a dive straight for the element.  Hubby was blissfully unaware until he heard my pathetic, “Oh!  No! NO!  No no no no no no no!”  He came running and we both frantically started trying to fish cupcakes out of the oven with spatulas while Noah stood in the background incessantly repeating, “I want to EAT one.  Can I have one?  I want to eat those cupcakes.”  We were able to salvage a few that are still edible, although not able to be decorated and presented to the family.  At least you can see how ridiculously cool the red white and blue effect is…right?

Anyway, I had to get some more cake mix and was afraid the store would be closing early for the holiday {just like my arch-nemesis of the moment, the Post Office} and so I rushed out to pick it up.  I quickly grabbed the mix, plus some disposable cupcake pans, paid for it, and was about 30 seconds away from home when I remembered that I only had one egg left after making the failed batch.  The recipe calls for three.  Crap.  I did a 180, headed back to Weis and ran inside where the security guard looked at me strangely, like, “Haven’t I seen you before?”  Of course they were out of the small cartons, so I got a dozen and paid for them at the U-Check that refused to give me a receipt.  I flew home and whipped up a new batch.  The timer beeped and I said one word to hubby.  “Pray.”  He must have because this time it went off without a hitch.
Aren’t they fun looking?  Imagine how great they’ll be once we get them decorated tomorrow.
Family, please do me a favor, and when you see/eat these at the picnic, pretend that they’re without a doubt the most amazing, creative, beautiful, delicious cupcakes you’ve ever seen in your whole life.
Thanks.
Many thanks to Hubby, who was on Disaster Control while I was at the store, putting Noah to bed and cleaning up the mess so I could go for Round 2.  Things are finally looking up…now if only I could convince the neighbors to save their ridiculously loud fireworks for tomorrow night.
PS – Wouldn’t you know it, I lost half of this post and had to type it all again?  Sigh.  I think I’m going to bed!

Oh no. I hate to giggle at your misfortune but I’ve been there before and know exactly how that feels. Especially when it is laced with the pressure of being responsible for the dessert happiness of a group of people. Poor you. So glad you got it together on the second batch. :) Happy 4th.

I love reading your blog. Thank you for being you. I hope that I don’t say that too much. You are wonderfully inspiring and I love how you can make the best out of all of life’s little lemons.
